Study finds cancer clues in saliva of heavy cellphone users

· A small study has found cellphones may increase the risk of cancer. Researchers from Tev Aviv University determined that the saliva of 20 heavy cellphone users had "higher oxidative stress" - a major risk factor for cancer - compared to a control group of deaf people who don't use cellphones at all or only use them for texting.

·"This suggests that there is considerable oxidative stress on the tissue and glands which are close to the cellphone when in use," Dr. Yaniv Hamzany said in a statement Monday.
·Oxidative stress is linked to cell and gene mutations that can cause tumours.

·Heavy cellphone use was defined as those who talked on their devices at least eight hours a month.

Hamzany acknowledged most people use their cellphones much more - up to 30-40 hours a month.

·The researchers said although the study provides more insight into the potential longterm impact of frequent cellphone use, more analysis is needed.
