Yesterday I updated my Windows XP Pro SP3 with all the new 20 or more
updates but after restart Windows Update is still asking to install 2
updates already downloaded and installed right, that is:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, Service Pack 1 (KB947738)

    Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, (KB937061)

    Why?

Are you certain these updates were already installed?

I recommend you install them again, and see whether the problem goes away.

Sure, on Sunday I installed 20 or more updates including these 2, restarted
system and noted Windows Update asked to install these 2 again. I
re-installed them with success and after I restarted the system Windows
Update asked to intall them again!

The following should be the last part of my log.

    Any suggest?

That's right, I'll check. However the articles says these updates were
released in 2008 while my Windows Update only alerted me of them in these
days (2009!). And I always install any new update, so I can't explain why..

    [Microsoft.Reportviewer.Webforms.dll]

    It should be:
    version: 8.0.50727.1843
    date: 04-Jul-2008 06:53
    size: 540,672

    Mine is:
    version: 8.0.50727.762
    size: 528 Kb
    date: 2006-12-02 06:15

    The other file:

    [ReportViewerLP.exe]

I can't find on my PC! (why?)

    What does this mean?

    Thank you,

    And so?

    Massimo

  7. OK,

    KB947738 definitely isn't installed then.

I suggest that you try installing it manually. First download the update, you
can start with the KB article link I gave you in my last post. Then run it and
see what happens. (Reboot the computer first.)

If the update won't run, or appears to run but doesn't actually update
Microsoft.Reportviewer.Webforms.dll to the right version, could you please
launch Visual Studio 2005. Go to the Help menu and select About Microsoft
Visual Studio. Next to a listbox that is titled "Installed Products" there is a
pushbutton "Copy Info"; press this, then paste the information into your reply.

    Harry.

Please try KB947738, since that's the one you checked the file details for.
After the install, check Microsoft.Reportviewer.Webforms.dll again to see
whether or not it has been upgraded.

Also I still need the "about microsoft visual studio" details.

Which is to say, KB937061 and KB938464.

Which specific updates does Win Update now ask you to install? KB937061 and
KB947738 as you originally specified, or is KB938464 in the list as well?

Note that KB938464 and KB947738 are different updates. You cannot substitute
    one for the other.

No, I certainly don't need you to send me any files.

Since you couldn't install the relevant update, there isn't really any point at
looking at the version information again either.

That's not the information I need. Please press the "Copy Info" button on the
About Microsoft Visual Studio dialog box, and then paste into your reply. It
should be at least a full page of text.

It looks as if the underlying problem is your inability to install KB947738. I
note you downloaded the Italian language version of the update; do you have the
Italian language version of Visual Studio 2005?

    Harry.

  12. Oops,

While the download page you link to is in Italian, the update itself is
international, so this isn't the problem no matter which version of Visual
    Studio you have.

    Please go to

    C:\windows\temp\VS80sp1-KB947738-X86-INTL

and send me a copy of any .log files in this folder by using this web page:

    Should be C:\windows\temp\VS80sp1-KB947738-X86-INTL a folder? I can't

I've just checked and it turns out that if the update is run manually (rather
than installed by Windows Update) this folder winds up in the user's temp folder.

    This is usually

    c:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\TEMP

However, KB947738 has been superseded by the just released KB971023, so we
    should start again anyway:

    Download KB971023:

    <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=e186aeed-e9d7-4a02-84b3-bbed116ca060>

Empty out the TEMP folder specified above.

Run KB971023. Does it appear to run successfully? If not, what is the exact
    error message?

Make a copy of the folder VS80sp1-KB971023-X86-INTL which should be in the TEMP
    folder.

If the update produced an error message, stop here and email me a copy of the
log files from the above folder. If it didn't, keep going.

    Reboot the machine.

Try Microsoft Update again; is KB971023 still offered?

If it isn't being offered, stop here.

If it is still being offered, check the files listed in the KB article against
    the ones on your system:

    <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=971023>

Let me know how the files compare, and also email me the log files from the
    above folder.

    Harry.

Even if the installation of VS80sp1-KB971023-X86-INTL went right,
after reboot Windows Update alerted me about to install:

  18. OK,

The creation and modification timestamps on the files on your machine are very
odd. The three timestamps shouldn't all be the same; could you doublecheck this?

What file system is being used? It isn't FAT, is it?

I suggest you try deleting those two files - Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll
and ReportViewerLP.exe - but make sure you take a copy of them first!

Once the files are deleted, run the KB971023 installer again. The files should
be recreated; what are the version numbers and timestamps now?

    Harry.

    Now:

I can't find it on my PC as last time.

    [ReportViewerLP.exe]

I can't find it on my PC, I don't know why.
