It is difficult for me to describe my problem, however I will try, as it happens when I first turn the computer on, black screen, white printing. Only half the page seems to load, I did notice two options up the top - one was delete, for setup and the other to press f11 for bios (I presume). I pressed both these buttons at different times, nothing happened. Turned in on and off many times, still nothing happened.

In desperation I got my notebook out and had only just started loading windows when my desktop started to do the same - whether by co-incidence or not I don't know. I am now "in" my desktop.

Is this a sign that something bad is going to happen in the future?

It sounds like it is just getting a bit stuck on POST (Power on self test), the computers way of checking every device and component is working correctly.

It's most likely caused by having a lot of peripherals (like external HDDs, USB/SD Card memory, USB hubs etc) and HDD's connected, could you list what HDD's you have (just whether SSD or HDD and how much storage in GB's) and what USB devices you have connected.

Hi woodyblade - You've given me a bit more confidence that nothing is seriously wrong. I suspect it is all the USB devices I have that maybe slow it down - you know, one for the mouse, one for the keyboard, one for the phone etc. :)

I'll have to unplug them while I am starting up. Will let you know if that solves the problem.

Further Judy. You may have a lot of unnecessary programs on startup.

Further to what DSTM said, you may want to try this program. I have been using it for years and it manages what loads on boot up. You can also do this thru the task manager but I find it is a lot quicker and much more simple to use.

    Hi Judy,
When you got the black screen with the writing ...... how long did you wait before you turned it off ?

Have you re-booted and is it working normally ?

If it doesn't boot up again try the following...
Switch off > then switch on again.
Immediately start tapping F8 about once per second.
You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options.
    Select Safe Mode.
Will it boot up using this?

( you can try this on the notebook too )
If the Notebook is not booting up at all try "Last Known Good Configuration" too.

[ it may be best to start a new thread for the Notebook as it may be two totally different problems :) ]
