My laptop messed up a while back and I did a fresh Windows 7 install. That worked great except when you leave the laptop idle it won't always start back up. Sometimes you have to push the power button several times before the blue user screen will come up. Sometimes you just get a blue screen that is blank with no user on it and you can't do anything from that screen.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite.

Anyway to fix this and make it restart correctly?

That's an odd problem. Can you tell us what you mean by your laptop messed up?

I got a blue screen of death and it just stopped working. I was told it needed a new hard drive but my husband's aunt is in IT and she said to just try a new Windows install first. I did the new install and haven't had any more problems except when you try to restart Windows after leaving the laptop idle.

How about we run a quick check of the hard drive?
Open Computer and find your hard drive. It'll probably be labeled (C).
Right click on it to open a context menu.
Click on Properties at the bottom of the list.
    Click on the Tools tab.
    Click on Check now...
    Put check marks in
    * Automatically fix the file system errors and
    * Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
    Then click the start.

It may take an hour or so depending on the size of the hard drive.

As a work-around you could take a look at the Power Options from Control Panel and stop it hibernating / sleeping

As an add-on to the above good advice did you install ALL drivers available via the Toshiba web site specific to your system?
