Good deal, a humane mouse trap!! The only time we ever see wee mice is when one of the kitties brings one in - unharmed. Think the cat is a tad 'off' as I'm quite certain she thinks of it is a wee friend rather than lunch on legs :)

Talking of spiders ..search engine spiders that is. What a wonderful things they are (mostly). It's spiders cataloguing everything that make it possible to search for information on any subject. They crawl around, gather and store away even a couple of words written within a web page. Then, if you happen to use those words as your search terms, the search engine will display the page where the words are written ..and all retrieved so quickly! Blinkin' marvellous!

The only downside is that anything you write is on the Internet is stored away forever in a database somewhere. Someone else's search could bring up your writings at any time. Always best to be aware of that when posting anything on the Internet. This post will be spidered and stored away forever probably. Anyone searching the Internet could find it if they use anything in their search terms that is written in it.

It helps the Search Engine Spiders, if we select Key Words, when Posting a New Topic.
Choose the Topic Headers carefully, bearing this in mind.
Often,we see a Topic header, thats reads "HELP MEEEE"
That is not helping CHF get hits.:)

Spiders are essential to our growth. If you do not wish to have your profile viewed by non registered members you can hide all or part of the profile by using options available to you in the UCP (User Control Panle) There is a tab for it at the top of every page.

Do understand both the curiosity and concern though - my first thought when learning about them was if the 'good spiders' can do it, are there such a thing as 'bad spiders' that can do the same thing but for less innocent reasons - eek!

Don't worry, our gunner, those 'spiders' won't send a web of spam to you - honestly! :)

I can see that this is how some sites work.
But my honest opinion is that sites should never allow non registered members or 'bots' of any kind to have access to members profiles.
This has been a long going hate of mine.
There is no need whatsoever for bots or non members to be allowed access and there's no gain for the site at all.

That would be wonderful, starbuck! :)

A 'spider' is a 'bot' and can be given 'permission' to troll through the remainder of our site, yet block them and non-members from reading our own profiles here - wahoo!

Depends on how you look at it, one thing I do quite often is a quick google for a suspected spammer, to see if the6y have been banned from other forums.

if all Forums closed this section to Bots this would not be possible

The fact is that I did inadvertently bar non members from viewing profiles and according to bschwarz who is aware of the implications, it was a serious mistake. I personally prefer to block my albums as they are mostly family pictures but do not have anything else that I can see the need to block.

In any event this is not going to change unless and until the Site owner agrees that there are no ill effects.

    Interesting read, re Bots-Spiders-Crawlers.

    "QUOTE.

    Good ones
Intentionally good and result is efficient: Like google and yahoo. They scan your website and return visitors via search queries in exchange. They leech away your resources but give something in return.
intentionally good but result is inefficient : Like cuil or yandex or other wanna look good but index selling companies. Leeching your resources and nothing in return. This is the place where you want to decide, if a bot leeches away 5% of your bandwith and return 5 visitors in a month or none. You should list that one as bad also.

    Bad ones :
Ones that scans your website and links in order to harvest emails, content, links and weak security measures and sell them to other people, businesses and other sources. Leeching from your back in other words. They are all bad and should not be allowed to view your contents.

That really is "an interesting read", Dougie - and thank you!

Have great faith in our Admins here and feel completely safe - the same cannot be said for a couple sites that others who use this same computer go to, unfortunately. (Don't you just love right-click & delete for those odd emails that arrive at times :)).

Match once took a screenshot of the "Whos Online" screen showing the MSNBot Spider as "Playing Donkey Kong"!

So they certainly get around and have fun :)

The yellow ! is an error message that is communicated to the spider. Spiders can't play games nor do they really want to :).

I find it really funny and made the connection as soon as I saw the words, spiders on the web. Isn't that where spiders are supposed to be? well real ones at least!
So to prove you can have spiders on the web, and play with one, here is a little game for you.
If genuinely fazed by big spiders don't look, this one is large, but fun to play with for a while.

By the way, you can't have the dollar note, it's mine.
