    Uhm, hello!

It's my first time asking about something like this, so I hope this is not too troublesome to ask some experts here about this (whether this be a big or a really petty problem). I'm no expert when it comes to these things, so the most I can do is to explain what I've done before this happened (I warn you that I might be a bit wordy).

My laptop is fairly new. Got it a few weeks ago exactly on my graduation. I've been using it for a while, though not as long as you might think. I've only used it once to surf the web. OK, maybe twice, then another time to mix some things in Audition and Audacity and such. I've only installed one game, and that's Ao Oni, which I do not think would be of any significance to this problem, but I just felt the need to say it in case it had become a factor.

Before this happened, I was recording something on Audacity. I usually take my battery off after charging it full as to not waste it, so I was recording without my batter, yeah. I had to eat dinner, so I placed it on sleep mode (which I think was a mistake, since I think my intention was to put it in 'hibernate' instead) and closed it and took off the plug as to not waste electricity and did my business. I went back to use it for a while and record again for a few minutes, but then my mum arrived and I was forced to move the laptop to the other room, which made me do the same thing; put it on sleep, took off the plug and placed it in my room.

After another set of minutes, I opened the computer again. In the first time I've done this sleep mode and plug removing, it asked me to start Windows normally, so I did since I usually had this message on my laptops before. The second time around, there was a recovery option by pressing [F4], so I did that, hoping I wouldn't need to open my files again, and there was this pop-up thing. Honestly, I couldn't remember what I did. I simply clicked something with the word 'recovery' and waited a few minutes. I had thought it was going to recover my current work, but after that wait, it asked if I wanted to start Windows normally again. So my work wasn't recovered, but the computer is working so I thought all was well... That was until every time I plugged in a usb, it wouldn't show any words. Same goes for when I tried closing windows using the Start Task Manager, whenever Adobe Audition was loading something, and Audacity suddenly didn't want to show itself to me. Some words are still visible, but these are the main ones so far, and I haven't tried out other programmes here in my laptop to know whether they're having this problem or not.

Is it my computer itself, or is it a virus? I'm hoping this isn't a virus or anything, just a glitch that can be remedied by doing a few clicks. I've never encountered this, so it's kind of getting me nervous, since the laptop's new. Although I have a 1 year Limited Internation Warranty sticker here, it's nerve-wrecking to suddenly not see words. If I need to download anything that assures no virus and free, as well as search for a few things (like simple specs or something that could help), that, for me, would not be hardship.

What my problem is can be found in this screenshot:

I hope it's really petty. I don't mind being scolded at for not knowing the solution to this. I just want it fixed. And I hope I'm posting this on the right forum? Since I'm using Windows 7? Please tell me if I've posted in the wrong forum and I will move it myself. Please help :(

    Thank you!

    Roo

    Hi and Welcome Roo.

We don't do scolding, and we do the moving if we decide its in the wrong place as it's easier for us :)

As for you problem I can think of a couple of options that should fix it but they are really the last resort options, I'll wait to see if one of our Tech's have a better solution before posting them. ;)

Just as Match has stated, we are not here to administer reprimands to our members who may have done something silly when using their computers. We are here to help computer users worldwide whatever their problem might be.

However...of all the errors that can crop up when computing, there is one that as far as numbers are concerned outweighs the others by far... And that is user error! It has to be said that all of us have at some time been the victim of our own mistake.

    Moving on...
As a starting point I would suggest running System Restore. This is not to be confused with System Recovery! When running System Restore you will be asked to chose a restore point ( A date ). Chose a date before you had your problems.

To run System Restore click the Start orb and type System Restore, then click on system restore at the top of the list given.

Let us know how this effects your computer.

Note: Put your laptop battery back in and Do Not switch your computer off until the restore is complete. System restore it's self will restart your laptop...thats ok.

Thank you so much, both Match and Frank, for replying. I didn't know where else to go but here. :)

Unfortunately, as I clicked System Restore, a blank box appeared. Apparently, even the System Restore box was affected.

A friend of mine, who was with me at that time, suggested doing it in another user account with administrative privileges. We tried, and the same thing happened.

As for the model, there isn't anything here that states the model, which I think is odd since the other laptop I was using had a model when I checked the System (My Computer > properties).
I am also using Norton as my anti virus. It's also asking me to sign up for a 30 day trial of some sort so I'm unsure if it's registered or something. The anti virus isn't displaying anything either. It's a blank box whenever I open it.

    Ok...try this:

    1. Click Start > Control Panel

    2. Make sure you have Catagory selected and not Large or Small icons. You can do this by clicking on Catagory in the top right hand corner of your screen.

    3. Choose Appearance and Personalization.

    4. Choose Fonts from the options given.

    5. Choose Font settings from the options in the left hand pane.

    6. Click Restore default font settings.

    7. Follow any instructions given. ( You may have to restart your computer )

As for your antivirus program, I would suggest you give Avast Free Addition a try. See the link below. ( Be sure to choose the free addition)

Note: You should uninstall Norton antivirus before installing Avast.

Hi! Apologies for the late reply.

I did what you told me to do. Restore default font settings. It's still the same. D:

Are you able to get into the advanced boot options menu?

This is done by tapping the F8 key (About once a second) when first starting the computer from completely off.

If you can do this...Do you see something like the image below?

Pay close attention to the first option (Arrowed in the image). If you do see the Advanced Options menu, please let us know.

Note: If you don't get the menu above on your first try...Turn your laptop off again (Hold the power button in for a few seconds)...and then tap the F8 key again when starting up.
