Spamhaus Warns Users of Ransomware That Leverages the Organization’s Name

The names of various law enforcement and watchdog organizations are often used by cybercriminals who rely on ransomware to make a profit.

According to Spamhaus, a new scheme uses the organization’s name to trick internauts into paying a so-called fine via MoneyPak.

“Computer users should know that no authorities or organizations (including Spamhaus) use screen blocking messages to collect fines for any law violations,” Spamhaus noted.

Victims of this ransomware attack are informed that they have 48 hours to pay the fine, otherwise all their files will be blocked and encrypted because they’ve been caught spreading malware.

In case your computer is infected with such threats, don’t pay the fine since there’s no guarantee that your device will be unlocked once the payment is made. Instead, use an antivirus solution to get rid of the malicious application.
