Soundcard not Recording

    My wife's Dell pc came with the regular integrated soundcard and she has had it for about a year now and never had to use the mic or recording section, the playback is fine but we can't record anything through this soundcard, I checked all of the settings on "my" pc which is the same as hers and I can't find anything wrong so I don't know why it is not recording, any ideas please?

    In the recording/capture side of the sound mixer, is the microphone unmuted and at a nonzero volume?
