So Odd.. cannot ping a server

    Hi All,

About a month ago, all 6 servers played up, the clients could not login
because they could not see DC, or if they logged in the traffice was too
slow, I got to restart all 6 servers couple of times, they took forever to
get back on, I changed the switch as well as cables etc... once they
restarted the network has seemed fine since then, that is all I did, nothing
    else special.

However one of 6 servers (Server6)has acted so odd, when I tried to ping
Server6 from the other 5 server, initially it gave Request Timed out (for a
while), but eventually I got reply from Server6.

From clients (XP Sp2, 2K Pro, Vista Business SP2) some of them can and some
    cannot.

I double checked the firewall ie none.
I uninstalled the Trend Micro Agent.
    I reinstalled the NIC driver
There are two NICs on this server, I did swap the NIC, the same result.
    I ran out of ideas.

    Any idea/help would be appreciated

    Regards

  2. Hello vdz,

Slow login connections problem. Did you change anything in DNS settings on
the servers? Remove DNS servers or change the ISP? Please post an unedited
ipconfig /all from one problem machine and your DC/DNS servers.

    Best regards

    Hi Meinolf,

thank you for your response. The issue with slow login was resolved, after
we got the DC1 back on completely.

But the current issue is what I decribed above.
The clients and servers are OK, they can ping each other, access all the
network drives fine except only one member server, from this server I can
ping everyone but from the clients some I can and some I cannot.
From the other 5 servers it takes a while to be able to ping it, it gave
Timed out initially about 2-3 mins then got reply.

    Thanks again

It would help if you provided us with more details, such as number of
subnets, use of WINS/DNS, network topology, etc…and as suggested already
post an unedited ipconfig /all from one problem machine and your DC/DNS
    servers.

If there are two NIC then there should have been more output from ipconfig
    /all

The fact that it is multi-homed is more than likely the problem.

To avoid the issue that you just mentioned I already disabled one of them,
that is why there is only one that appeared from the ipconfig /all.

    Thanks anyway

    Hi All,

Thought I would let you know that I have found the culprit i.e. the hardware
    failure.
I put another separate network card, everything works fine.
Thanks for your help and support.
