SMB Shares stop responding in Server 2008

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by Larry, Aug 4, 2008.

    Larry Guest

I have a new Server 2008 server that is provided user file services. After
a few hours the user shares slowly stop working user by user until no users
can access the shares. There are no errors in the Event Log. The only
fix is to restart the server. But, the problem returns after a few hours.
Does anyone know what the problem is?

This is a brand new Dell 2950 III Server. Server 2008 was installed at Dell.

  2. Hello Larry,

Do your NIC's have a power option enabled to turn off the device to save
power? How did you configure the clients, with a static mapping? Is this
    done with \\servername\share or \\ipaddress\share?

    Best regards

The NIC do not have a power saving option.

Yes, the clients are using static mappings with \\servername\share name.

I am still having the problem. At this point, the only kinda solution I
have found is to reboot the server every morning. Most of the time I can
make it through the day, but some days I have to reboot the server in the
    middle of the day.

I sure hope some one has a solution.

Hi Larry, I have good news for you. Let me guess, you have some sort of
symantec antivirus tool running on the server right? Disabel doesnt work, you
have to uninstall it, then wait and see. I found others that had the exact
same problem and they all had symantec in common, and it fixed the problem
    for everyone.

You are correct. We are running Symantec EndPoint protection version
11.0.2. I talked to Symantec yesterday, they say this is a know bug in
EndPoint Protection and the fix will be released in Maintenance release 3 due
out in September 2008. In the mean time they have proved me with a work
around. I should know if this is the fix in the next day or two.

    Thanks for the help. Larry

Curious, can you provide the workaround for us?

  9. SMB Shares stop responding in Server 2008 - Larr

I just had the same trouble when I setup 2008 on my new Dell Power Edge T300 server. Every day, I lose my shares and no evidence to be found in the Event log. I have Symantec Corporate ED 10.2 Antivirus installed. So?. does anyone have any information about a work around yet for Symantec?

    Hello Jonathan,

Are the shares on a DC or a member server?

The first thing to check is to make sure none of the machines (DCs, servers
and desktops) are using any other DNS server than the internal DNS servers
that host the AD zone name. Using anything other than the internal DNS
servers is inviting trouble with AD.

Other things that can cause this:
Multihomed DCs (DCs with more than one unteamed NIC and/or IP address).
    RRAS installed on a DC.
Single label name AD DNS domain name (domain vs the minimal requirement of
    domain.something).

If none of the above are true, it could be the TCP Chimney/RSS feature
causing problems on the servers. Please read the following for more info and
    possible options to fix it.

TCP Chimney and RSS Features May Cause Slow File Transfers or Cause
    Connectivity Problems
