OK. At this point, are you saying that when you go to msconfig you can not disable anything because if you uncheck items, the Apply button is greyed out?

No, just checked- at this point if I disable something the Apply button is available. But at some point yesterday when I was trying to disable and enable entries, the Enable button was ghosted.

I thought about posting screenshots but the Services list numbers 100+ and the window has room for just a dozen or so- that would be a lot of screenshots!

So things are looking normal. Let's try this again.
Get back to msconfig. Just work with the Startup tab. Disable everything except Emsisoft's program.
Don't mess with the Services tab.
Restart the computer and report back.

OK, did this without difficulty, startup time 1:35 or so.

1:35 isn't bad at all depending on your computer.

Let's see what we're dealing with. Please download, install and run Speccy. Then post a report here.

Well, this computer is by no means, state-of-the-art. Speccy scan 6-7-18.png

I just discovered this thread. I also have Windows 7 and it seemed slow for a good while. I looked at services, did not count , but there must be hundreds in the checked list. To start with until I learn more I checked Hide Microsoft Services but there were still a good many left.

Maybe a good idea to start your own thread, Bill.:)
    This is Slowpoke's thread.
Any Services, you disable other than "Microsoft Services" has to improve Boot time.
    Be it, ever so small.

Sorry to hijack a thread. No harm intended. Just found it and thought I would comment. Don't really need to start one or continue. Just read this one.

I can't believe I have to repeat this again, but here we go:

There is no need for a check mark on "Hide all Microsoft services", as you SHOULD NOT be in the Services tab that shows that option. MS services are of no concern, and the other non-MS services are generally third party programs that you like to use and/or those program update services.

The position of disabling services to speed up your computer is laughable non-sense. It's like saying that if you take out a few CD's from your car's glove box, then your car will be faster.

It's the same snake oil BS as registry cleaners, temp file cleaners, defrag programs, etc.

Thanks to all who posted. My strategy now is to leave the services, startup programs, etc. alone, start the computer once in the morning, and use the "sleep" option throughout the day until shutdown. Slow startup issue solved.
