Hey, I know quite a bit about computers but one thing I am completely in the dark about is Internet speeds. I am paying for 3mbps download and 1mbps upload speeds on DSL. Now when I see download speeds I think 'hey this file should be downloading at 3mbps' but im assuming that's not how it works. Right now most of my downloads sit at around 250-350kbps and that includes torrents. Speed tests show me at 2.47mbps download and 660kbps upload. My modem/router is hooked up with about a 10 foot phone cord, its an Awire modem/router that is also wireless.

My first question is whether or not there is anything on my end I can do to get the full speeds im paying for or is there probably problems with interference in there lines? Also just for my own knowledge how the download numbers work, basically at what speed should a movie or music should download at on a 3mbps connection. Thanks a ton for any help.

Our rules strictly forbid giving instruction regarding torrent or other P2P programs or uses. That being said you can test you speed at http://speedtest.net or any other testing site to see if your ISP is giving you what you paid for.

There are many things that determine how fast you can download form P2P sites and internet speed is only one.
