Server 2003 Stops Sharing

Discussion in 'Windows Home Server' started by Carlo Baldini, Sep 26, 2009.

  1. We've got a 2k3 server that functions as our file server. 1-2 times a day it
stops sharing anything, and must be rebooted. We lose access to all shared
drives, including administrative shares. In addition, we can't remotely
manage the server or connect to the registry remotely. I AM able to see the
shares via \\localhost, but not from any other machine on the network. The
only thing we can do to fix it is RDP in and reboot.

I have tried restarting the 'server' service to correct the problem, but it
refuses to stop. There are NO unusual events in any of the event logs.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated, I'm pulling my hair out!

Well, it would be nice to have some log excerpts from around the time
the sharing "fails" so that we can see what happens (then again, yes, I
know error logs don't help that often).

  3. Here is ipconfig from the fileserver:

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : ki2k3fileserv01
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : domain.com
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : domain.com

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel® PRO/100+ PCI Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-90-27-23-29-70
    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.57
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.10
    172.17.0.14
    Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.10
    Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 172.17.0.14

    And from another machine:

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : ki2kexg002
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : domain.com
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : domain.com

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : HP NC7782 Gigabit Server Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-12-79-D6-E8-B9
    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.13
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.14
    172.17.0.10
    Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 172.17.0.14

I did change the domain name, but their actual domain name is a .COM
    domain...not my doing.

What is interesting is that the server at 172.17.0.14 is not a DNS server or
a WINS server. I don't know if it used to be, but it isn't now, and I
probably need to fix that. They didn't begin to have this issue until a
couple of weeks ago, and nothing to my knowledge was changed with any IP or
server role configuration. Also, when the issue occurs, I don't have any
trouble pinging the server via the server name. Could it still be a DNS or
    WINS issue?

Curious, how did you "change" the domain name? Did you perform a domain
rename procedure, or simply changed the Primary DNS Suffix in Computer
    properties?

Does that name in the Primary DNS Suffix posted in the ipconfigs, match the
    AD DNS domain name?

Also, if a WINS server IP address, or DNS address for that matter, is
provided in the ip configuration, but the server isn't really a DNS or WINS
server, then it has to be removed, otherwise your machine will be querying a
    non-existent machine.

Can you also post an ipconfig /all from your DC, please?

  5. Hello Carlo,

Please remove the x.x.x.14 from the DNS/WINS list if this doesn't have that
server roles. Also post an unedited ipconfig /all from the x.x.x.10 server.
The rest of the output looks ok.

    Best regards
