Screensaver Problem

I'm running WinXP PRO SP2 on a 3 MHz Dell machine with 2G RAM.

Suddenly my screen saver started acting up. The power settings for it
    are off.

When it first comes on, it works OK, but after a time (unknown because
I've never timed it) it slows down to almost a stop and the images
    move jerkily.

I've not installed any new software and I've run Malwarebytes'
Anti-malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Super Anti-Spyware and
Adaware. I run Avast for a virus program. I ran some of the programs
suggested for Conficker all with a clean bill of health.

Does anyone know what happened? Anything similar in Win98?

    Thanks

    Henry

Crtl-Alt-Del , three finger salute the thing and find out via task/system
manager what is taking up system resources and CPU time.

Sounds like some program takes the opportunity to do its work while you
are away. That could be legit! I've never used it, but I know avast! has
that ability-- if you use its screen saver. Do you? It could be any of
your other scanners doing it too. Check their help screens to see
whether the ability exists & has been activated, SpyBot especially.
Finally, check Windows own Task Scheduler to see whether it has
scheduled a Scandisk or Defrag. In Win98, normally we want to turn that
off & occasionally run them manually ourselves. It's better that way!
