Hello---cannot get new DLink router installed. During the process I got a pop up from ISP " Hughes Net Modem could not be found". Then my Hughes net status meter turned yellow. I have tried 2 times---no go  . I do have a new icon on desktop--"Network Security" Which contains my password etc..

Ok--had a chat with Hughes net.. They only advise they could give is to call their tec. support & they would help me install---FOR $ 59.95 eeeeek B S

I'm completely lost--this one is supposed to be the easies to install ( ha ha).

I would really appreciate any thoughts on this---other wise I will have to call the tec. in town ( $50 @ hr. to come out here)---THANKS

Skip did your router come with software that took you through it step by step? The first thing I would do is uninstall the new router. Turn off the laptop and the router. There should be a small hole in the back of the router for reset. Use a paperclip or something similar to reset. Then unplug the modem and do the same thing. Wait a minute or two and plug the modem back in wait until all the lights are on and redo the process. If it fails try to keep track of any messages that you get.

Hi Skip. A Techie will have to give you step by step instructions, to hook this Router, when using Hughsnet Satellite.

This is not the normal Router hookup.

When you hook up the router, you won't be able to access the Net,

    till further changes are made.

A techy, that is good at Networking, should be able to help,Skip.

Sounds like the dish transceiver and router may have the same IP address. Skip - you may have to call your ISP for a little help.

I take back everything I said, (even though it may work but only as a result of dumb luck on my part ) It does appear that satellite internet is a different animal altogether.

One simple fix is to rent an apartment in the nearest town, get a major ISP and run a very long cable to your home on the hill! B)

Reading the link posted in #3, it seems that the dish receiver wants to use 192.168.0.1 which is what the D-Link routers I've worked with in the past want to use. It just a matter of changing the D-Link network. I've had to do that with a Verizon FIOS setup where they had installed two routers - one for Internet and the other for TV. Most likely you can do it, but it takes someone with more expertise than I.

With the Verizon setup, the did help be get thru it.

At this point I think I need to have Hughes net come out and solve this. I know he does it, just more $$$$ to shell out.

I have put in a call to him & expect to here from him about the problem. I will see how much he wants & see if there is any more replies to this problem.

Don't forget out there, I have no other choice in ISP providers, but do have no neighbors, traffic,& hear no sirens & rarely a airplanes.

    The trade off--LOL ;)

    Gunner,

So you have a set top modem/box for your telly yes (also capable of broadband)

The router ALWAYS goes after the device that delivers the internet and not before.

you should be able to plug an ethernet (Cat5e) cable into the back of your device that delives the internet and then plug that into your router into the MAIN port on the back (normally labelled differently if their is a built in switch on the router)

    HI----
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    All done--All up & running.
First I could not get the DLink router installed. I called Hughes net installer to find out if it was compatible--wife answered phone. She said see would ask him. Next thing I see he is at my door at 7 pm. In he came--He tried for 1/2 hr..Next just shakes his head, say's will have to return with a diff. brand.

Came back 2 days latter with another--a Belkin high end model ( bout $84 ). He installed it in 5 min., without using the instruction disk that came with it.

Know some out there don't care for Belkin, but I am happy with it. As for the DLink, seems like there is a compatibility issue with a satellite (maybe just with Hughes Net--don't know).

New notebook now up & all programs & security installed with the help of my good friend in Sydney.

End of story---Many thanks to all that replied on this issue --gunnner

BTW---very cool to run 2 putas at the same time
