    Hello, all!

I have a customer who backs up their documents on a Win2k3 server using the
built in backup utility. The backup data is sent to a folder on a Win2k8
server. The backed up data from the Win2k3 server is then backed up using the
Win2k8 backup utility (this win2k8 back up includes more files including the
    Win2k3 data).

I restored the Win2k8 backup to get the Win2k3 document backup to look for a
deleted file. When I tried to restore the Win2k3 data on the Win2k3 server,
the backup utility said it was not recognisable media.

Any help will be appreciated to restore this Win2k3 data.

  3. Hello Mark,

    Thank you for posting here.

Based on the research, this is a backup compatibility issue between Windows
Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

If we take the backup use the NTbackup utility on Windows Server 2003, we
may need to use Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility to restore the backup
files (.bkf file) onto a Windows Server 2008.

Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility

However, When we use Windows Server backup utility in Windows Server 2008
to take backup, the system makes the backup files in the form of .vhd and
.xml, which cannot recognized by Windows Server 2003. This is by design. In
other words, we cannot restore the data that is backup by Windows Server
2008 to a Windows Server 2003. To fulfill the demand, we may need to copy
the original data directly from a Windows Server 2008 to a Windows Sever
2003 via shared folder before backup.

Hope this information is clear and can be helpful.
