Renaming Domain

I have moved a single DC to a different site and have to rename the domain.
This is a very small site and is running only one server which is acting as
the DC and exchange server. It is not joining a forest or another domain and
will be the only DC on site. Is it possible to rename it? I have tried to
run the rendom tool but errors back that the behaviour of the forest is 0 and
it must be 2 so server unable to rename domain, error 8245.

Thanks for any help in advance ...

  2. Hello Hazel,
Domain Rename is very tricky as it might result in adverse effect on your
environment. Why are you planning on renaming your domain? If you do shooose
to here as some guidelines from technet

The 0 means it is in mixed mode.
Value of 0 or not set=mixed level forest
Value of 1=Windows Server 2003 interim forest level
Value of 2=Windows Server 2003 forest level

This means the domain and forest levels need to be raised. It also means
that the domain rename needs to be at Windows 2003 levels, which means that
you cannot have any Windows 2000 domain controllers in the forest.

How to raise domain and forest functional levels in Windows Server ...The
    attribute is msDS-Behavior-Version on the CN=Partitions, CN=Configuration,
DC=ForestRootDom, DC=tld object. Value of 0 or not set=mixed level forest
    ....

But as Isaac asked, what are your basis of renaming?
Do you have Exchange installed? If so, what version of Exchange?
How many DCs do you have?
What operating system versions are the DCs?
What errors are you seeing that is prompting the idea of a rename? If so,
can you post the eventID #s to possibly help you with this?

  4. Hello Hazel,

One question before, why do you need to rename it? It's a major step and
shoul only be done if no other way exist.

For domain rename you must run forest functional level server 2003 and that's
only possible with 2003 DC's or higher. If 2000 DC's exist you can't raise
    it.

Alos domain rename with exchange needs additional configuration.

I'll be even more succinct than the other wise people who have replied:

Forget about this. You're running Exchange on your DC. This is not going to
happen in any way other than extremely long, painful and error prone. Unless
your domain is named something smutty that is likely to get you arrested,
    leave it be.

everything so thats that! But thanks for your comments. :)

Glad you were able to come to a resolve on this, one way or another!

    Cheers!
