I have a popup in my task bar that reads: "Your Computer is infected!
Windows has detected spyware infection! it is recomended to use special
antispyware tools ... Click here to protect your computer from spyware". It
is represented by a red dot with a white X. Scanned my PC, not found, I
have downloaded Windows "defender - no use. How do I get rid of this thing?

Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. It is called "rogue"
because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them!

Look for removal steps here for your specific flavor rogue:

    Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -

or here - Malwarebytes malware removal guides -

Malwarebytes' Anti-malware (MBAM) or SuperAntiSpyware will often do the job.
Both have free versions and you do not need to purchase these programs.

These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the
computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected
by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean.

Standard disclaimer: If your machine is one of these cases, either get
guided help at one of the specialty forums below OR back up your data and do
a clean install of Windows. It is your choice. If you are unsure how to back
up your data or how to do a clean install, you can take your machine to a
local computer professional. I don't recommend using
    BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of places.

    Hello:

Stealing the thread of another poster is considered impolite. Top
posting will only make it worse.

Malke's reply in this thread is well organized and very thorough. I
suggest you follow it and post a follow-up with your progress in a new
post of your own. Malke's references to MBAM & SAS will likely be
    very helpful.

    Regards,

    Re: The Non-Truth.

Would you trust the reputation of the software of someone who:

1.) Would steal the intellectual labors of others only to call those
labors his? Would you term this the pirating of a proven thief?

2.) Would have you believe he is really the woman pictured on his web
page when *HE* is not? Is this shameful impostering?

3.) Would lie to everyone about the authorship of the scripted code he
calls his own? Is this dishonest and plagiarism?

4.) Would use “MVP” in his “From:” address in a vein effort to have
you believe he is an MS-MVP? Is this blatant misrepresentation?

5.) Uses “ms-mvp” in the URL of his web site in a further effort to
have you believe he enjoys the honor bestowed on only those who have
truly earned it? Is this impersonation?

6.) Has, and may still host, on his web site, unspeakably offensive
filth that may only charitably rise to the definition of pornography
by few? Is he a lowly pornographer?

7.) Currently has the lowest possible Web Of Trust (WOT) rating
possible? Is his site very untrustworthy?

8.) Is listed in the HOSTS file of the *REAL* MS-MVPs available
    through: <http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm> Do real MS-MVPs
believe his site should be (and do) blocked for real parasites?

9.) Lacks the support of any respected MS-MVPs who fight malware
daily. Does he lack common respect?

10.) Has disabled a true and respected antimalware application – MBAM,
with his own software. Is he outwardly malicious?

Does this person appear to have high morals and excellent character?

Do you want this person writing software for you?

Would you want a big government to employ a person like this in a
    position of great trust?

As a tech, would you use his wares in your best client’s PCs?

Honestly - will you knowingly execute his wares in your PC?

I have been experiencing the same problem, did lot of searches on the
web, but was not able to find a solution that worked. Adware did not
take care of the issue, I have Spyware that was provided free by my
ISP and that did not find anything either. Searched the registry, but
still no go. I would really appreciate an solid answer on this issue

web, but was not able to find a solution that worked. Adware did not
take care of the issue, I have Spyware that was provided free by my
ISP and that did not find anything either. Searched the registry, but
still no go. I would really appreciate an solid answer on this issue

    Fix your file/registry permissions...

Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting"
titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions"

    *will take time
(** Ignore the last step - you *should* install SP3, but not now.)

    Reboot and ...

    Download/install this:

    After installing, do the following:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
    "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" g!
    --> Click OK.
(The quotation marks and percentage signs and spacing should be exact.)

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

    SuperAntiSpyware

    MalwareBytes

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
    if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:

    Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
    ( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )

    Reboot.

    and...

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):

.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
    %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
    --> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

    Reboot.

    Then follow the instructions here:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

    Reboot.

    CHKDSK

    * will take time and a reboot

    Defragment
How to Defragment your hard drives

    * will take time

Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.) Never get hardware drivers
for hardware that was not created/sold by Microsoft from Microsoft.

Reboot right before you continue - even if you rebooted throughout the
    tasks above.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
    and visit
    and select to do a
    CUSTOM scan...

Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

    Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
    time. Rebooting as needed.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or
"Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid the
Optional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to install
Internet Explorer 8 at this time.
