I got this computer from a friend and it still has norton/symantec
ever;ywhere on it. the subscription is expired and I don't intend to renew
it, I have gone to add/remove and when i tell the computer to remove it, i
get a message about possibly harming the computer if i continue.
I really don't want it on here.

    I have AVG now.

oh and I can't find the AVG file anywhere. I don't know why because i had
no problems with it on my other computer. please help

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton
2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton
    SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.

Do not pass Go! Format the HDD & do a clean install of Windows. Please
note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
    isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

  4. PA Bear's advice may seem like malware removal steps, but they are
(ironically?) appropriate. Aside from the possible inference that Norton
= malware, The first thing a person should do with a newly obtained
pre-owned computer is to "make it their's". Who needs someone elses
    (possible) problems.

Removing NAV is feasible, if it's a NIS suite then I generally reach for the
    boot CD.

But if it's pre-owned I'd prefer a clean start anyway. Just remember to
note-down the hardware types in Device Manager before formatting, this can
save a lot of time spent hunting for the right drivers.
