"Remove Security" virus/trojan

I just got the following email which is self-explanatory. But it is
puzzling. I had just told him to get MBAM last week and it apparently
identified it. He is pretty good with computers and this one is strange.

But I am puzzled by her not being able to get into MS Office or Outlook.
From what I could see on Google, this is not how that named trojan works.

Any suggestions? Or Forums she should go to??

A very good friend of the family got hit with something, the likes of which
I’ve never seen. On Sunday, the 27th, she had trouble getting to the
Internet. She lowered the threshold on the firewall and was able to get
out. She was also having problems getting onto her Microsoft products,
including Outlook. So, she reinstalled her Office 2003 and was okay with
most of the programs, but not the Outlook. In the mean time, she couldn’t
    get into her Norton’s anymore.

I finally got over there last night. Malwarebytes showed she had malware
called “Remove Security”. Outlook still didn’t work and we searched and
could not find any .pst files. We downloaded Bitdefender and the scan took
so long I had to go home.

Just googled some more and found the Bleepin' Computer Tool to remove this
which obviously is just using MBAM. I will fire that off to him, but I am
thinking that the MS problems do not have anything to do with this
    trojan.....correct??

Anyway, if there is more information I need for them, I would appreciate it.
It is kinda hard to picture a 4th part computer and diagnose it.

OK....just heard from the go-between and he said that MBAM got rid of the
trojan. Wish he had said that before, 8-((

She can't open Outlook so will find PA Bear and get that sorted out.

It is so durned hard to try and figure out what they are NOT saying that I
need to know to help. Or words to that effect. You have my condolences for
    doing this every day. (G)

    Hi Figgs:

Have the person go to Control Panel --> Mail
Ceate a new email profile and have it query the user which email profile to use when the
    user starts Outlook.

This way you can find out if the problem is within the MS Outlook application or is it
within the user's MS Outlook profile.

Thank you so much, Dave.......I will fire this off to Steve now and he can
work with her on it. Is there a particular ng that Steve or I should
access?? I have never used Outlook, so useless in this case.

Thanks Peter and David.......as luck would have it, Bruce Hagen had posted a
long list of Outlook news groups when I tried the OE group. I have been on
these MS groups so long that I forgot how to access them with the "news
    address", lol.

My friend also uses Outlook, so he will probably hit the ng's for her and
will be able to sort her out.

    Cheers.....Heather/Figgs
