    hi

I'm looking for software which can able me to remote control another pc. My
goal is to be able remotly control my dads computer. My dad is 77yo and
don't know much about computers. He often asks for help, lately he asked for
help with updating the antivirus. But I have so little time to spend at his
home... it's only a weekend every 2 month or so... but if I could remotely
control his computer then I could update antivirus and do other maintenance
tasks remotly in addition to help him navigate on the internet...

(my dad lives about 2 hours away with train, he started learning computers
    when he was 75yo)

we both uses winXP, I got XP Pro, and he has XP media center (or what it's
    called)

any software recommends? I was looking for pc anywhere, but didn't find it
at symantec.com... maybe there are some free software on the internet which
    I can utilize?

    any ideas?

  2. Hello jeff,

You can use Remote desktop, included within XP or VNC for example.

    Hi,

I use CrossLoop (www.crossloop.com) with success.

VNC or UltraVNC would be my first choice - Remote Desktop sometimes
fails to proper install updates via that mode and doesn't always display
    prompts that require attention.

With VNC you/he can see the same screen at the same time.

I would suggest that you setup VNC to run on TCP 48000 instead of the
default port 5900, and you will need to map that thought his NAT
Router/Firewall as well as enable that port as an exception in the XP
    Firewall.

I'd sign him up for the free version of LogMeIn. It works very well - he
won't need to do anything special for you to access anything, and you can
reboot into safe mode, etc. easily. www.logmein.com

Note for future reference that this is a server newsgroup -
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general would've been a better place for this
question. Good luck - doing tech support for family members is hard work!

The nice thing with CrossLoop is that it is VNC inside, but since it uses a
proxy to connect the computers it works through NAT and you do not have to
modify firewall rules, only to allow the crossloop.exe application.
