A number of recording artists, led by eccentric billionaire Alki David, have filed a second lawsuit against CNET and CBS Interactive. The plaintiffs hope to convince a court to block the company from distributing BitTorrent applications via its download website, Download.com.

The complaint, provided by TechDirt, alleges that CBS and CNET have not only facilitated the downloading of 65 million copies of BitTorrent applications, but they’ve also promoted piracy through some of the news articles they’ve published.

“Bittorrent is a clear and present danger to copyrighted works. From evidence readily available in CNET’s own ‘news’ articles, it is clear that bittorrent applications like uTorrent are growing explosively to fill the infringement vacuum left by Gnutella applications,” the complaint reads.

Although the plaintiff’s arguments have a lot of faults, mainly because the BitTorrent protocol isn’t necessarily utilized for illegal purposes, this could set a dangerous precedent for future cases if the court decides to rule in the artists’ favor.

I've got a copy of Pinks new Album, any one want to swap for a copy of Alanis Morissette's new album, I'll email my C90 tape if you email me one in return, at what point will the Big Record companies realise that you will not stop teenagers trading music with each other. and stop making solicitors rich, paying Millions of Dollars out in lawsuit's that could be used to discount the price of music? to me the greatest threat to the music industry is the greedy over paid Multi Millionaire music producer, not the teenage file sharer, remove every torrent off the net and they will find away.

Long before the internet when music came on a flat round disk that required a turntable and a needle to play it, those disks swapped hands, it wasn't stopped then and it will not be stopped now, music recordings will always be moved from one owner to another or at least be lent regardless of the technology required to play or swap that recording.

It is the mass pirate copying that is then sold that is the real problem for artists.

What makes me laugh is the Billions spent on law suites that could be invested in cutting the price of CD/DVD's and would considerably reduce the demand of people downloading illegally.

Quite right too Match, unfortunately the greedy don't see it that way.
Even if they didn't spend the money, they wouldn't give it back by reducing prices, or even giving staff a wage rise, it is all about keeping profit up to satisfy the all too fickle share holders.

I could go off into a mega rant about the share system, share holders, and how they have milked the copyright laws to feed their greed, but enough has already been said about that.

Nothing contained in this thread should be construed as condoning copyright infringement nor does it address the dangers of P2P software.

As I read, this is simply social commentary.
