Recent places does not store history

The recent places file does not show any history. Also the start menu is also empty. The all programs in the start menu shows all the programs properly. I have tried everything except to edit the registry. This is a new computer. Windows 7 OS. Acer Aspire E1-771-6496.

 

Hi Give this a try!!
1. Right click on the start button
2. Open 'Properties'
3. Check the box that says 'Store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the task bar'. This is the second check box. I found this had been left unchecked in my case. Now i've checked it and 'recent items' works fine.

Did that. Tried everything you can find in a search on the issue. Except make changes to the registry. Nothing works.

 

Hi! You could try a sfc /scannow or Start up repair!! This is the best I can do!!

Did scan. Came up clean. Can't do start up repair. Don't have disc. In other words did or attempted to do all you suggested. Thanks for your time.

 

Hi maybe others will have more help. Some times you can get to startup repair through safe mode!

Startup Repair will try to repair computers that are unbootable because of the following reasons:

• Registry corruption
• Missing or damaged system and driver files
• Disk metadata corruption (MBR, partition table, and boot sector)
• File system metadata corruption
• Installation of problematic or incompatible drivers
• Installation of incompatible Windows service packs and patches
• Corrupt boot configuration data
• Bad memory and hard disk hardware (detection only)

Startup Repair will not repair unbootable systems caused by the following issues:

• Malfunctioning firmware and other hardware components
• Problems with clean Windows installations or Windows upgrades (for example, from Windows XP to Windows Vista)
• Windows logon errors
• Viruses and malicious software

 

I don't see where startup repair has a thing to do with any of this, the system boots up...if this is a new computer I would chill here James as it takes a while to populate those things you are concerted with and build a history. Now when you say new if you mean a few months like 3 or more then well no that is too long so then I might consider posting in the Malware Forum as this is one of the things Malware can cause.
