I have an Iphone 4s mainly because I can speak my texts. That being said I have learned to use quite a few other apps.

I now saw a very enlightening video that points out the differences and improvements. I have made a list of the most significant.

    OK I'm done.

Oh wait, the screen is taller if you care about that. The 5 is 4G and the 4 is 3G but if you are on wifi I could not see any meaningful difference.

Oh by the way they both works as telephones. :).

I read the 5 is much lighter among other small improvments.
If you owned a 4 I can't see it really worth investing in a 5.
    The changes are minimal.
Of course unless you wanted to brag to your friends you have the latest.
Here in Sydney idiots camped out for up to 60 hrs to be the first to get a 5.
Bet they wouldn't camp out for 60 hrs to get a Job.

As my Dad says what more do you want in a mobile phone than one what makes phone calls and sends text messages :p, didn't take long though I've converted both my parents & brother to toting Android smartphones :), unfortunately they don't make tea yet :p

They wouldn't know what to do without them now, also you wouldn't believe me that my Mum was the first out of the three to start using a smartphone (my brother wasn't allowed one till recently) as odd as it seems my Mum has always been the more open minded about new technologies, my Dad is just the usual old man who doesn't like change too quickly :D :p

Reasons NOT to buy anything i :- It's made buy Apple.

why don't I like Apple? well the main reason is that damn annoying update software that constantly asks if you want to install other Apple software, so I buy an iPhone, I take a video on it I put it on my PC and that's where the problems start.

I'll not deny if you can afford to buy a Mac system or have one an iPhone is a really good option but I can't so Android wins every time, and forget your HTC, Samsung etc research Huawei, look at the processor specs, memory and price then compare them to the market leaders.

as I was once told its not the money you save its the money you don't spend :)

Spelling police :), "it's made by Apple

But I agree I'll not buy anything Apple, just personal tastes I prefer to modify Android to my liking (I've rooted my phone), even though my Mum bought an iPad on Saturday and I've used it for about 4-5 hours already, it's a neat little product I'll give you that.

As for Huawei they are certainly catching up with others, but as a networking company I wouldn't trust them entirely, I don't know what their involvement is with the Chinese government (if you can call it a Government) but I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, if I did buy a Huawei phone I'd be rooting it straight away as I don't know what could be installed on the device.
I've been more of a Samsung fan myself, bought a few Samsung electronics/devices in the last few months, don't think my tastes will change all that much with most hardware I have being Samsung, Acer or Asus.

I am considering this very issue right now. Daughter has an iPhone 4 and is anxious for a 5. I am thinking about my first smartphone and generally avoid apple products. I have been a Motorola fan.
But my question is this, in post #5 Woodyblade mentions 'rooting' a phone. What does that really mean? It sounds like a format and reinstall of the O/S but that's just a guess.

If this s/b a separate thread please move it. Thanks.

No need to move anything this is not that kind of thread :) This is what Wikipedia says about rooting a phone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_%28Android_OS%29
I am not all that phone literate and only got an iPhone because everyone in my family has one. I like it but have no idea what, if anything, makes it better than an Android system.

I watched a video on YouTube. Where they went head to head between the 4s and the 5 and there was not much difference in anything except the size of the screen and even that is the oddest resolution that I have seen.

Unless your daughter is getting a real good deal selling her old phone I would suggest not bothering.

In simple terms rooting can be explained as being able to flash/install a custom ROM/OS, basically Android is built around the Linux Kernel, I think Google merged some Android changes into the main Linux kernel branch recently (might be 2.6.33), Linux has a Root user within it that allows system level changes things like editing system config files, so by rooting a device you can modify what ROM it runs, change clock speeds of the processor and GPU and also undervolt the processor and GPU to save some battery life (though in reality that is only 20-25% of battery drain, most is from the screen obviously) this is amongst other varied tasks and software that you would otherwise be unable to run on the stock/manufacturers ROM (at least this is my understanding of it all).

Wikipedia will explain it in better detail than I can though - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_rooting

The main thing to keep in mind is the quality of the TV advertising. As with all things if a TV commercial is better then the phone must be better too. That is how I know that Toyota is better than any other car because Ely Manning drives one. Of course there is a problem because Derek Jeter drives a Ford.

I just am so confused perhaps I should just walk? :)

(For you Brits: Ely Manning= Quarterback for the NY Giants and Derek Jeter=Captain and Shortstop of the NY Yankees)

You might suggest not bothering between a 4 and a 5, but the daughter has quite the minid and finances of her own.

But Peyton drives a Buick, as does Shak.

But thanks for the link and explanation.

The thing is that these smart phones and the original inovation behind them, all stem from this little device here=

    Hello,

i have an iPhone 4S. That was my first Smartphone so I cannot compare it with Android or Windows Phone OS. I belive that the iPhone is really user friendly and since most of my family members own one it was an obvious decision. I also like programming and developing. In case some of you guys are also interested about this topic then there is a guide that I found quite useful. It is about how to develop an app for iOS, you can also find examples there (http://www.voip-sip-sdk.com/p_511-windows-phone-platform-voip.html). I know that there are tons of apps but it would be quite nice to have an own one.
