I WOULD need a psychiatrist if I let these damn computers drive me
nuts. I walk away when I get pissed off at them. That's why the CD
burner is in the garage now. I'm not going to let some stupid machine
drive me crazy. It's not worth it.

I did check that bad burn CD again. Apparently my drive is only
capable of 650megs. All files beyond that amount are the ones that
can not be read. I selected them and hit "properties". it's the last
ones burned that dont work. I will have to admit this burner is
garbage. I dont think the software is all that bad, it's the burner.

Maybe YOU think Imgburn is simple. I installed it. When it started
throwing at me all sorts of terms and numbers and settings, I knew
right away this was not for me. Hotburn Pro is simple. Few settings,
and what is there is pretty easy to understand. But it only gives me
2X or 4X for burn speeds. Probably that is all the drive can handle.

My main reason for deciding not to bother with CD burning anymore
(besides it starting to stress me out), is because I guess I never
understood how they worked. I always thought it was just a matter of
choosing a folder such as E:\Photos. and feeding blank CDs until all
pictures were copied, including the directory tree (just like on the
harddrive), or to do a backup, I thought I'd just select the root dir
such as C:\ and feed in blanks until everything was on CDs.
Now that I know it's not that way, it's just too much hassle. I just
backed up my whole computer and increased my second HD from 20 to
40gigs, while adding a partition, so I can install Win2k on D:, so all
the stuff on D: got moved to I: but the few games I had on D: will
have to go back there because they are installed. Everything else is
just storage, and Dos programs that will run on any partition.

Anyhow, spending more money for a new CD drive, and software, and all
of that just dont seem to be worth it. I dont have anything to play
MP3 songs on, except the computer, so there's no sense burning them to
CDs. I left the photo department at Walmart burn my photos to CD, and
they do it so I can play them on a DVD player, which I doubt I can do
without spending more on software, and wasting much more time and
hassle. For $50 they burned the past 14 years of my photos to CD.
That included the blanks. I really can not complain abotu the cost.
So, since my photos are burned and wont need to be burned for a few
years again, and I cant easily use CDs for backups, and have no real
reason to put music on them, why do I really need to burn CDs? The
few times I take files to friends, I can just use a flash stick.

Maybe CD burning and DVDs too, are great for people who pirate music
and movies have a use for burning. My computer is too old to even
attempt burning movies, and what's the point in copying a music CD I
already own. I do find some of the oldies music that I like online,
but they are MP3s and those wont play on my regular CD players, so I
just listen to them on the computer. I also noticed that the CD that
actually worked, which has all .FLV videos, was too darn slow to play
them without breaking up. They play fine from the harddrive. Of
course I suppose this is once again a slow CD drive.

Anyhow, I may have not accomplished much, but I can now say I did
successfully burn a CD, and I learned a lot doing it, even though what
I learned was not what I expected. I thought CDs were much more
useful, but I now see they are not. They have their place, but not
something I can't live without. I think flash sticks have sort of
replaced their usefulness, and no matter what I do, I will never trust
them as my only backup. And for the record, I DO NOT drop my
    harddrives.

    Thanks for your help.

That does seem to be fairly definitive.

Unfortunately, the software _may_ only work with that burner. (But as I
said, you'll get something with a new burner anyway - and burn4free also
seems to work with almost any drive: there's a huge list on the website
of drives it's been found to work with.)

You can certainly have a directory tree on a CD (and on a DVD of
    course).

Out of interest, did the one CD you made successfully (or the first 650M
of the one you did too much of) include either any mp3 files, or any
JPEG picture files? If so, it would be interesting to try putting it
into your DVD player (I assume you mean a standard domestic one, the
sort that lives under your TV), and seeing if it sees anything there.

Well, as I said, you can make ordinary audio CDs from mp3 files, with
    most burning software.

Indeed: it would again be interesting to know how those work in your DVD
player, though by no means all DVD players can play .flv files.

For temporary storage and especially for transferring files between
    machines, definitely (at least, CD-RWs).

I do have a lot of my backup on CD-Rs. I would say make more than one
copy of anything really important, but that probably applies whatever
medium you use. (I think most burning software will ask, when you've
finished a burn, "do you want to make another copy"; certainly ECDC, and
    I think Nero, do.)
