Hi Pippy. In answer to your Question. There are 2 major players, here in OZ, that dominate what the ISP's offer. Telstra and OPTUS.
Singapore Telecommunications, bought Optus in around 2001, for 17 billion Dollars, and these two own majority shares, in most other ISP'S.
The contracts are very expensive, as you say, here in OZ,and way behind, the rest of the world, as far as download speeds, available.
They all say UP to 20 Meg,but haven't heard of a private person getting anywhwere near that speed.
We are behind the times, compared to the rest of the World.
I hope some day, they will have unlimited Downloads, but don't see this happening in the near future.
We need some new ISP providors, who aren't dominated, by the big two.:)

I have a friend in Australia (don't know what part) who uses "Unwired" internet... that's the actual company name and it's possibly the worst provider she's yet to use. But she doesn't want to have to get a home phone line so it's the "best" deal for her.

It's supposed to be "mobile" as well. She can just grab her laptop and her modem and hook up "anywhere"... Except for the fact that the reception is ridiculously poor quality NO matter where she goes with it!

As long as they monopolize the market, the users will continue to be exploited.
