Random System Lags

I stand corrected. I misread and was referring to Ctrl + Space + Esc. (Not shift) Ctrl +Alt + Del has the same effect whether you have the welcome screen or not. In any event you were right and I wrong.

 

My RAM is: 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 PC6400 Reaper HPC with Heat Pipe (CL4-4-4-15)

I've updated My BIOS now, lets hope that helps...

 

Well, the bios update didn't help with the usb-problem. So I'm pretty much back at square one... Is there anything else I can try?

OK Bios upto date, right drivers! un-installing USB controller resolves things temporarily, this means or hopefully means one of your USB devices has a wrong driver or a firmware fault. need to work a process of elimination and see if we can work out which one it is. Hopefully we will find one that causes the problem if not things start getting complicated.

 

They are fine, just wanted to check you were not using 1066RAM, have you checked to see if the RAM is in dual channel mode?
If you look at the DIMM slots on the MOBO, there are normally 4 DIMM banks, 2 will be one colour RED and the other YELLOW I think on your board or BLUE and LIGHT BLUE, if you look straight on at the banks to run in dual channel you normally need one stick in 1 and the other in 3 or 2 and 4.
Its not uncommon for DIMM slots to go bad, so try and switch the RAM into the ones they are not in now and see if that helps with the lag

 

Before we go any further with this "investigation" (can't seem to find a better word for it) I want to ask you guys something. Do you think these problems are software or hardware related? Because if they are hardware related I still have a warranty so I could send it back and get it fixed, or get parts replaced, almost for free if that's the case. There would be a lot of trouble with backing up and such, but I could live with that if I really have too. When I started "investigating" I hoped this was a software related problem so I could fix it without sending it back but if I need to repair or replace any parts it would be better to just send it back.

So which one do you think it is? Software or hardware related?

I think I've found out something that might help a lot. I re-installed my OS (again) but this time I didn't use RAID 0 on my two 1TB HDD:s. It seems like the problems went away then. Is it possible that these problems were caused by the RAID? I don't really see the connection between RAID and the USB, but since the problems seems gone now I guess it might... Does this mean I can never use RAID on this computer?

 

The lagging could be caused by RAID if it was not setup properly, but no the USB and SATA/RAID are not related other than the fact they are controlled by the MOBO.
RAID can be a pain to say the least to set up if you have never done it before, some MOBOs do it for you and thats normally when there are problems as they dont always get it right

As you have also reinstalled the OS, that would mean that if there were any problems with the drivers or the system then they have effectively been 'reset' now. So all you can do is carry on as you are and see if you encounter the problem again.
