Questions about how to using LDAP get the configurations of exchange 2007

Hello,

I am try to using LDAP get exchange 2007 configuration, currently, I am
using LDAP browser ( a free tool) see the configurations saved in Active
Directory,
(there are many infomations of exchange2007 saved in ActiveDirectory, You
can use
ldap://your DC name:389/cn=Microsoft
Exchange,cn=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=ecora,DC=local??base?(objectClass=*)
as the url to see the infomation tree )
but I don't know how to get some configurations infomation.
anyone can provide LDAP paths to get info will be appreciated.

My forte is not scripting, however, as far as I see, as long as Power Shell
is installed, and you have the commands in your script, I don't see a
problem. Maybe someone who has more experience with Power Shell with
scripting, may help better than I can.

I cross-posted this to the PowerShell newsgroup to see if they can help. As
I previously posted, I don't see why not as long as PowerShell is installed,
but the folks in that group can provide more specifics than I can.

You can just check back in this group for responses, but at least you now
know the other group exists.

Each of these items is available using the CmdLets from the Exchange
2007 Management Shell:

1. This will return the values exactly as you've requested:

Get-ExchangeAdministrator

2. This one has a bit more information, if you run it like this you'll see:

Get-ExchangeServer

If you only want the selected columns then:

Get-ExchangeServer | Select-Object Name, ServerRole, AdminDisplayVersion

3. This splits up a bit because the node you select shows all possible
recipients (Mailboxes, Groups, Contacts). Each of these has more than
you've requested so we're limiting the returned data with Select-Object.

For Users:

Get-Mailbox | Select-Object DisplayName, Alias, `
RecipientTypeDetails, WindowsEmailAddress, OrganizationalUnit

For Contacts:

Get-MailContact | Select-Object DisplayName, Alias, `
RecipientTypeDetails, WindowsEmailAddress, OrganizationalUnit

For Distribution Groups:

Get-DistributionGroup | Select-Object DisplayName, Alias, `
RecipientTypeDetails, WindowsEmailAddress, OrganizationalUnit

You can call PowerShell CmdLets using .NET as part of the
System.Management.Automation class.

For that to work you would need to be able to use .NET from whatever
language you're coding the application in, and you would need the
Exchange Management Tools installed so the code can access the CmdLets.

That means grabbing the .NET Framework 3.0 SDK (or better), and adding a
reference to System.Management.Automation from C:\Program
Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0 folder.

thank Chris, I am researching how to intergrated the PowerShell to our
program in the past days.
I found we must make sure the client has PowerShell installed, or it can not
work. this need do more changes
in our installer. we are evaluating the risks.

I have problems:
In my tested domain, there are have 2 exchange 2007 servers,
it seems only when I run the test exe on the exchange server machine, it can
works well. but on others machine,
it can not work.because they not install Powershell or exchange.

In my real envirement, it cannot sure the applications can run on the
exchange machine.

I think ADSI (LDAP) is another valid way to access the configuration,
because we can aceess this API in most of the computers.
but I don't know the correct path to access it.

Do you have any infomation about how to use ADSI(LDAP) access the
configurations of Exchange 2007?

I wasn't expecting you to run applications on Exchange, but both
PowerShell and the Exchange Management Shell can be installed elsewhere.

Anyway, not to worry, we can explore other approaches.

1.

This looks to do two things.

First it enumerates the membership of the groups in "Microsoft Exchange
Security Groups". That's pretty simple to do in LDAP.

Then it evaluates the Security Descriptor on each Exchange Server under
the Configuration tree. I don't have any rights configured there so I
can't tell you what it's going to display. In general that's more
complex, but is still possible via LDAP.

2.

Name is easy

Server Role is potentially defined by this attribute:



We'd have to reverse engineer it's values unless you can find a
reference for it. That assumes it's anything other than 0 for Exchange 2007.

Version is stored in the serialNumber attribute, so easily accessible.

3.

All available in LDAP with little fuss.

RecipientType is "msExchRecipientTypeDetails" and is the most difficult
of those.

If you're using a DirectorySearcher it's less of a problem because it's
automatically marshalled to Int64 in the result set. If you access the
object as a DirectoryEntry (or through any direct ADSI interface) you'll
be presented with an IADsLargeInteger, a ComObject, see:



We could so with some values for msExchRecipientTypeDetails:

UserMailbox: 1
SharedMailbox: 4
RoomMailbox: 16
EquipmentMailbox: 32

I think we might find Mail Enabled User (rather than Mailbox Enabled
User) is missing from that, but I don't have any of those either.

Any thoughts on these?
