Question for Alan Edwards on using Flash Drive with W98

Discussion in 'Microsoft Windows' started by Larry, May 3, 2009.

    Larry Guest

I see in a thread in early April you said that with a driver installed,
Windows 98 would work with a flash drive.

I had always thought that only W98 Second Edition could work with some flash
drives, but that W98 First Edition would not work any any flash drives at
all. This site which you linked
    http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

says that it is possible to do it with First Edition. This is great news.

Is there anything I need to know before downloading the driver at that site
for W98FE and attempting to run a flash drive on the computer (which I want
    to use for backup)?

    Thanks,
    Larry

Not Alan, but I will try to give you some answers to this, as I too have used the
driver you refer to, as well as others.

The driver referenced by Alan has both a Win98FE and a Win98SE version, but the FE
version requires the installation of an unofficial third-party "service pack" that I
    prefer *not* to use.

For Win98FE, therefore, I recommend using a different driver, from the Italian web
    sitr wintricks.it

It is not installed beforehand like the one Alan mentioned; rather you point to it
when Windows first detects the inserted thumb drive, as you can see from the
pictures on the web pages, even if you cannot read Italian.
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98.html

Although the pages are in Italian, you can look at the screenshots on some of the
pages to determine how the driver is installed and uninstalled:
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98.html
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_2.html
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_3.html
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_4.html
    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_5.html
The Download link is the "Download" button on the last page.
    http://www.wintricks.it/download/wtgenusb.zip

Basically, you download the driver package (.zip file), and unzip it to a folder
where you plan to store it on the computer. Then when you insert your flash drive,
Windows will detect it and give you the option to find the driver. Choose to have
it look in the folder where you unzipped the downloaded files, and it will see the
..inf file there and install your flash drive.

The obvious choice for the location to store the downloaded .inf file is in the
hidden Windows\Inf folder, or the Windows\Inf\Other folder. Of course, any folder
will do as long as you can browse to it when loading the driver.

Let us know how it works for you.

Re: on using Flash Drive with W98

    Glen,

I've got it installed and working with no problems. Unbelievable.

I thought it was going to be much harder than it turned out to be, because
the author of the program had about six pages of text explaining the driver
(in Italian), but most of it was talking about the need for this driver and
how he had developed it. Also, if you can make out any of the Italian (or
use Babel Fish to tranlate), you can tell he was pretty excited himself when
    he got it working:

    http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_6.html

The only particular steps that were needed to install other than the usual
clicking through the Wizard, was knowing which boxes to check at one point,
and navigating to the folder where I had put the installation files. The
    rest was routine.

    I can't thank you enough.

I would just tell people, don't be intimidated by Neddi's (from a Google
search I think his full name is Sergio Neddi) long article in Italian. It's
really just a standard installation, but you do need to follow his screen
shots because at one or two points they give crucial instructions.

His article about the driver is interesting. You can tell he's excited about
having created it. I wish there were a better translation of it into English
than the Babel Fish version I generated.

I wanted to write to him and thank him but there didn't seem to be any way
    to do that.

I can't get over the novelty and convenience of having a four gig flash
drive working on my ancient Windows 98 Desktop.

(This is the Italian USB drivers.)

Does your above advice mean that the .zip file contains _only_ .inf
files? (I know you didn't actually say that.)

    Hi John,

No, there are 5 files...an INF, PDR, SYS, TXT and an uninstall.bat
So, on second thought, it is probably better to extract them all to one storage
directory you can easily find. Although you can use the Windows\Inf directory, it
might not be the best choice.

    Thanks for bringing that up.
