Those files look like Windows update files. I would leave them alone.

I agree that they are Windows Update files.
Windows update is meant to clean up after it self... but it doesn't always.
You'll probably find that trying to remove these is not as easy as it seems.
    So yes, just leave them.

Yes they are normally hidden files you probably have show all file and folders unticked and that is why you can see them. Notice how the folders next to the file name is lightly colored.

Battery if dying will post how to hide them when I get where I can charge.

Thanks Rustys - I thought they should not have been shown. I should know how to hide them, but will wait for your instructions.

Rustys won't mind me jumping in here, as he's having charging problems...

    To Hide System Files
    • Click Start.
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select Tools menu
    • Click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section.
    • Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
    • Click Yes.
    • Click OK.

Thats a bit of a worry starbuck - I have not touched the View tab - but I already had everything as you listed above - so why would these docs still be showing?

If you already have the files set to hidden, thats ok.
I wasn't completely convinced that they were showing because of the hidden file setting, but as I haven't had time to check this on my Win7 system I thought it wouldn't hurt to post the info so you could double check.
None of those types of files show on my Win10 system.
But I do see them regularly in reports..... and we never try to remove them.

Are there any files in those directories? Where is that directory located?

Also looked at the dates and they show late November and early December 2016at about three in the morning.

See there is a directory called Autodesk which makes drawing software.

The Autodesk has this in it. Autodesk_PIXLR_Win-32bit.dlm ( I do have Pixlr installed)
The funny named folders are all empty down to Intel
I had not noticed the times, bit odd don't you think? Something obviously starts up at that time.

Is they system left on 24/7? Or some thing similar?

System back up and defrag are some times are set to go at that time. If the system is asleep it will awake and do the process then go back to sleep.

I have to be honest and say mostly it's on 24/7 (sometimes I do shut it down tho)
To be honest, I could not understand that WUD stuff.
Bottom line is - do I delete or don't I - and why has it only just been happening. Perhaps I should turn the automatic Windows Update off and do it manually?

I just checked Windows Update and you are right, it automatically installs at 3.00am. I have now adjusted it to "check for updates but let me cxhoose whether to download and install them" No idea if that will stop those annoying empty folders.

You can delete the empty windows update folders if you wish, however you will not gain any Disk space, as they are Zero KB's.
If it makes you feel better. Those empty Folders shouldn't be annoying to you.
They won't come down all the time.

I'm not after disk space, I have more than I need - but it means I have to scroll down to "user" all the time, whereas if the folders were gone, I wouldn't have to scroll down. Yeah I know - I'm lazy!

Thanks for your help Dougie, have now deleted said files, and as I said before have now adjusted the updates to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

Thanks so much for the help.
