Anyone knows of a good solution for public folders without exchange
    server involved?

Sharepoint will do a lot of the same things PFs do (and more).

Is it possible to export from public folders directly SP, or via PST or
    not possible at all?

You can export to PST files but why not simply open Sharepoint in Outlook
    and copy things in directly?

Quest has a migration tool that exports and imports into SP. As far as
    natively, no.

If you have public folders already (which his question implies - "export
from public folders") then you can use Outlook for this, as long as you open
    your sharepoint folders in OL.

I believe that's how the Quest tool works. IIRC, it must be installed on a
workstation with admin rights and with Outlook installed so it can use the
MAPI functions, but please don't quote me on this. I'm going by memory from
when I looked at this tool over a year ago planning a Sharepoint migration
for 3000 public folders in the last place I worked. However management
turned out shooting the whole project down due to complexity, cost and the
fact that it will cause mass confusion. <sigh>

    Thanks for the pointer...
Never dealt with SP, so I am trying to get a clue.

Hmmm. Well - Outlook can do this on its own quite nicely if you don't have
    3000 :)

True, plus the cost of this product!! It is rather expensive to use once and
    destroy, like a toothpick!

Definitely agree. Quest makes some very nice products but their target
market is for companies far larger than mine - it's frustrating.

I have a client running MAPILab Groupware server
(http://www.mapilab.com/groupware/server/). They are sharing folders /
contacts / calendars all with out a problem.

The way MAPILab Groupware server works is you install an add on to
Outlook that allows it to connect to the MAPILab Groupware server that
is sharing up a .pst file.

From what I remember licensing was not bad and you can run it with out
    a server OS.

There is one company in Philly I almost got a position for, that a friend of
mine is still working for. They perform many solutions for large companies,
and exclusively use the Quest suite of products. He did say they are
expensive and can't see how any smaller consulting firms can even come close
    to affording them.
