I have several pub docs which used to open, but for some reason an emailed *.pub document would not open.  Stupidly I tried open it with Word.   Bad move - now none of my pub docs will open (only in Word and with garbled message)

I seem to now be having problems with Publisher, so I re-set it up -  it seemed it was faulty and it said Publisher failed to launch in safe mode- "do you want to start repair". I clicked on that and it said Microsoft Office Single Image 2010Setup completed successfully.  In safe mode I got a message "Windows installation service could not be accessed. This can occur if the windows installationis not installed.Contact your assistant."

I have absolutely no idea what to do next.

Am I to understand that you already have Microsoft Publisher installed? If this is the case then is your version of Publisher a legitimate version?

The following link may help you to sort your problem out.

When going to the above link. Under Resolution try method 3. I think that this is where your problem lays.

There is a 60 day free trial of Publisher 2010 available to download here...

Yes, my Microsoft Office was purchased on-line 7 Aug 2012 and I had used it before until a week ago when I tried to open a pub file.   When I couldn't - as mentioned above, I tried to open in Word, and now that seems to be the default program.

I followed step 3, but the same thing is happening.   The program had stopped, I started it - it said to start in safe mode and then when I try to open a pub file - I get Word (default) even when I try to "Open with" Publisher.

When you try to open a pub file don't click on OPEN instead choose OPEN WITH.
Browse and select what you want to open with.
At the bottom of the option box tick open like files with the one you chose.

Why dont you install Adobe Reader and use that program?
Your Microsoft office may be corrupted and need a reinstall.

WOW!  Interesting.  I didn't realise that Adobe Reader could display Office Publisher files.  Thanks for the info DSTM.  Don't personally need it as I have Publisher 2007 but good info to know. :)

I was under the impression Adobe Reader could.
I could be proved wrong on that point, Jay.

Not that it is a true test but I just tried opening a Publisher file with FoxIt and it failed.  FoxIt is an Adobe Reader replacement that has a much smaller footprint on the system.  Just because FoxIt won't does not mean that Adobe won't.  By default all FoxIt wants to show as openable files are PDF, does not even have an option for Publisher's PUB files.  Again, does not mean that Adobe Reader can't.  Sigh, tempted to install Adobe Reader just to test but will have to think about it.  I just don't like Adobe and wouldn't even have Flash installed if I could get away with it.

Oh, OK.  I get it now.  Adobe Reader isn't actually opening a Publisher file.  It is opening a file that was saved in PDF format in Publisher.  End result is the same as long as you tell Publisher to save in PDF format.  Actually I have done that but only for a document that was to be put on the web.

I do however have Kingsoft Writer but caan't open with the version of publisher.

I wonder if I could download Publisher 2007 - free?

Don't worry about Publisher any more thanks, I was able to download 2003 from a disc and can now open the publisher files.  I don't use it that much, but need to have it there.    It seems I was using a trial which had ended, tho it did not say that on the screen.

The Skype thing that crashed, have taken Skype off altogether, hate it.   So all back to normal thanks, and many more thanks for the assistance.

Skype is a wonderful program, Judy.
I spend about 4 hrs each day talking to my friends all over the World for nothing.
You can have a party line and have Video as well and see all your relations so they don't need to visit.
I'm sure my relations used to fast for week before visiting :jump:
Send images and Files to each other. What more could you ask for.
I wouldn't be without it, never.
My guess is you hate it because you are unaware of all it's benefits.

Well true (about not knowing all the benefits of Skype).
The point is I would rather type (being a typist) than talk, and not all my friends have cameras.   Can you still just type?
I guess I won't have any choice when Windows Live Messaging finishes up.
