Just logged in and saw this Rich.
For what it's worth I believe that a reinstall is the way to go as well. If you do still want to do that, then we should move this thread to .... http://computerhelpforums.net/forums/windows-7.15/

Just a couple of questions first:

    1. Have you, or are you trying to install from a disk? And I have to ask..Is the disk a proper copy from microsoft?

    2. Did you try a Custom/Clean install? And if so, did you use the format option when installing?

    An after thought..
I'm assuming that the computer is set to boot first from the CD/DVD drive?

Ok...there are a few ways of tackling this issue Rich.

    1. Disconnect everything from the computer except for the keyboard and mouse.

    2. Check the optical drive (DVD drive) connections.

    3. Try and start the computer and gain access to the Bios...(Possibly F2)

    4. Check that the DVD drive is set first in the boot order.

If after doing all the above you still cannot boot from your disk. You should try and run Check Disk.

    Click Start/Computer
Right click on C: drive and select Properties
    Choose the Tools tab
Under Error Checking, click "Check Now"
Tick/check both boxes and click Start

The computer will have to reboot to run this check.

If you are unable to run Check Disk on this machine , then the way forward is to connect the HDD to a healthy computer, and run the check from there.

PS. I have to hit the sack now...I'll check in tomorrow morning.

Ok Frank, I did all of the above. I ran check disk and it appears to be fine. I set the boot sequence to the optical drive. I inserted the O/S and it started to load, then nothing all we get is the cursor and nothing more. I have another idea about this problem, if his hard drive is full, could this be the problem???? I think the drive was close to being full and he tried to load more data on it.

Nope, not even in safe mode. I have never run into a problem like this before and I can't understand why the Windows 7 disk won't load. It starts to, then nothing. I think his hard disk is full.

How many drives has this PC. You have to take all the data off the drive before you can format the drive prior to Installing Windows7 or you lose all your data.
Is the drive full or only the partition that has Windows7 on already.
Is the Drive partitioned do you know?
Do you know what size the Hard drive is?

It only has one drive and as far as I know it is not partitioned. His drive is 300 gig and I know that is was close to being full and I warned him about that. It seems to be locked up for some reason and I have no way of retrieving any data off it. I simply cannot get it to boot and I tried everything.

OK Rich, He needs to buy a second Hard Drive and install Windows7 on the new Hard Drive.
Then he can copy what data he wants from the present Hard Drive to a larger new hard Drive.
This is the best way under these circumstances. Hard Drives are cheap.
You could take his Hard Drive out, loosely hook it up internally to your computer, take the data off if you have a spare drive big enough to save the data on then format the drive to NTFS, put it back in his computer and install Windows7.
I suggest buy a larger new Hard Drive and install Windows7 on the new one.

Frank is very busy at the moment. He will be on a bit later

Well, I got Windows 7 to load and in such a way that we will be able to retrieve his current data.

Well, it didn't work, it stopped installing. I have a spare 1TB drive, ready to go. I will install that and see if I can retrieve data from his old drive and copy and paste. I am thinking that his current drive is either full or it pooched and you're right he would need another drive.I will let you know the progress later on. Thank for your help Dougie.

After taking the data off, Rich don't forget to format the drive before you put the drive back in your room mates PC. Best of luck.

You may have to split the data up into smaller sections to copy successfully.
