Thanks for the screen shots. I won't be around for a few hours. In the meantime, are you running a 32-bit or 64-bit system? If you don't know, go to the System Control Panel (or right-click My Computer and choose Properties). Does it say you're running Windows 7, 64-bit?

It seems like you have seriously corrupted windows files, which may be caused by a failing hard drive. If you haven't already, back up your data if needed, then run the extended test with this hard drive diagnostic tool:

    https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3

If it passes, then I suggest restoring the computer to factory condition. If you would like to do that, please post the make and model of the computer for instructions on how to do that.

Have you been running Windows 7 without ever installing SP1?
Support ended for Windows 7 without SP1 installed on April 9, 2013 so you are missing more than 4 years of patches and Windows updates.

At the very least, they should have installed Windows 7 with SP1!
The "repair" shop installed a 4 year old unpatched operating system.
I'd ask why they installed an unsupported version of Windows 7 and not the version that came out 6 years ago.

I bought a computer in August 2011 and it had SP1 installed on it.

First check if your Window's 7 is genuine:
    1. Click the Start menu and select Control Panel.
    2. If you’re viewing by Category, click on System and Security.
    3. Click on System.
    4. Scroll down to the area at the bottom labelled “Windows activation.”
    5. On the left it should say “Windows is activated” and on the right you should see the “genuine Microsoft” logo (see below).
If it's genuine, you can try running the system file checker, but if that doesn't work, I don't see any other practical option other than re-installing Window's 7.

To run the file check, start tapping away at th F8 screen as soon as you turn on the computer. From the menu, use the arrow keys to choose Safe Mode With A Command Prompt" then press Enter. At the command prompt, type in sfc /scannow and press enter. Note the space between the c and the /.

Run the file checker three times then type in exit and press enter. Restart the computer and go to Windows update and see if it works.

If it doesn't, please post the make and model of the computer.
