    Hi,

Running Windows Server 2003 SP2 which has a lot of file shares on it. Anyway
one day get a call from a user saying loads of files are missing. I explain
to him how to use Previous Versions and explain that a user has probably
tried to cut instead of copy or something like that.

Anyway the guy says he has not made that many changes so wants to just
restore everything back to a certain date which is in the Restore Versions
box. So he clicks restore and it starts to restore, until it reaches a
certain file where it says access is denied...

I have personally witnessed this and found the file in the previous version
viewed through explorer. It is called EF24B000 and has a file type of just
file and a date of around 2006 for both creation and access. I go to right
mouse click it to take ownership of it, but it says I have no permissions (As
Domain Admin) so I must take ownership, I go to take ownership but it says it
is read only. I go to change its status but then it says the media is
protected!! (I am assuming all of this is because it is a previous version)

    What really concerns me is:

    a) I do not have the power to remove this file from the previous version in
anyway, which means the user can not simply click restore at the top level of
    a very big folder stack

    b) Someone/something else clearly did have the power to remove it

Any ideas as to what I can do about this? I have since found another file
    with a slightly different name
