Oh, I'm so envious! Your dog is simply adorable and I bet it's lovely being able to see out those lovely eyes without hair getting in the way. Very, very sweet puppy!

I actually like the shaggy look better but she doesn't and that is what counts!

So many choices offered - I simply can't resist giving a lot of them a try, so thanks for sharing the list with us, Cat.

Did you ever find a program that you perfect for you, BeeCeeBee? Sometimes finding one that's both intuitive for us to use plus gives the results we want isn't always easy.

(I couldn't stand the 'feels like 108 degree' temperatures here right now - so thought I'd hack off my own hair - hack being the operative word, sadly - should have gone to your little dog's groomer instead! :)).

Thanks for adding Irfanview to great options members can try, Bob - I've used it myself and you're right, it is good.

I use Photo-Paint that comes as part of the CorelDraw graphics suite but have recently tried PhotoScape. This is a well-featured photo editing program. If I wasn't so familiar with Photo-Paint, PhotoScape would definitely be on the short-list of alternative editing programs.

You're right, Wellie! Just tried PhotoScape and it's not only intuitive to use but even with the brief experimenting, it's got a great 'White balance' and 'Back light', etc - will definitely be playing with this one further - thanks!

When all is said and done I am more confused than ever. I appoint Mara as my agent to decide which one I should try first. I am looking not to have to learn a whole lot and get good results. Feel free to take your time

Laughing because it can be truly mind-boggling, I know.

First, because each program does at least one thing 'better' than another program (adding to the confusion here :)), so to narrow it down ...

What is it you want the program to do most? Or, to put it another way, what is the regular problem(s) with your photos that you'd like to be able to fix?

    For instance ...

Crop photos (so the unwanted areas of a picture can be 'taken off', leaving the important part to become the focus of a photo)?

    Perhaps improving colour?

Once we narrow down your needs, will be happy to recommend a program (free one, of course) and help with a basic tutorial. (I remember what it was like when starting with these and what seems 'simple' now was mind-boggling at the beginning :)).

OK first off I have no needs. I have a basic editor that came with the camera and I know it is not all that great. I am just looking for an all around good easy program that does most things well. The emphasis is on easy because most of my stuff are just snaps and not artistic.

I used to be a good B&W photographer with my own little dark room but that was in another life and most of it is lost. Now I am a grandpa with a cute dog.

It was a hard choice but I'm going to recommend the free Version of Photofiltre ...
PhotoFiltre Freeware download and review - photo editing and effects from SnapFiles

It's intuitive and although it has lots of options most people will rarely use, it's great for just the 'basics', too. (Shall provide tutorials, if you like).

One hint ... when installing it, you may wish to install the English version (unless you're really good at French :)).

Really impressed that you actually had a dark room - wow! And, as much as I love colour photos, something there is literally no better medium for capturing a moment that black and white. Smiled when reading your words about "now a grandpa with a dog". A very cute dog! (Maybe we should start a thread on member's pet photos).
