Phishing Alert: Facebook Fan Page Verification Program

Several advisories have been published over the past few days – including by Scambook, Hoax Slayer and Facecrooks – regarding a new Facebook phishing scam. It all starts with a message purporting to come from Facebook. The notification informs recipients about a new security feature called “Fan Page Verification Program.”

To put some pressure on potential victims, the message claims that their Fan Pages will be suspended if they don’t complete a verification process. Facebook users who fall for it and click on the link are taken to a bogus website where they’re asked to hand over their Fan Page URLs, email addresses, passwords, and a so-called “transferring code.” The entered information is stored in a server controlled by cybercriminals who can use it to gain unauthorized access to the victims’ accounts.

The bogus message reads something like this:

“You are receiving this message to notify you about the new security feature from Facebook called ‘Fan Page Verification Program’. After many Fan Pages have been stolen lately leaving us no choice but Deleting them forever, we had to come up with an original solution about the Fan Page's Security.
