Always knew bears were intelligent but geesh! Suspect one must still be wandering our sidewalk as all the neighbourhood dogs are going a bit nuts right now ... and earlier this evening, the poor neighbours directly behind us (an alley separates our back yards) have had some damage done.

The bear couldn't be bothered to attempt to climb their 5 foot cedar fence ... rather, he/she went directly to the gate and tried to rip it right off the hinges. Never made it through (suspect only because it wasn't determined enough), but their gate is 'toast'.

Yes, apparently they called Animal Control but other than literally hunt the bear down if it's injured or killed a human, they rarely can do much.

For one thing, this bear (or who knows, maybe it's different bears - they kind of all look alike to me :)) lives in the gully/ravine that is heavily forested and really wide plus runs for miles ... and bears hunt for miles.

Unfortunately they have really good noses and can smell food (or what they consider 'food') for a long distance so even locking down garbage cans is no guarantee. (Personally, I even wash the plastic wrap that comes on meat in soapy water prior to tossing it in the garbage ... but not all neighbours realize these are not 'cute' animals and, in fact, have one who was actually was putting food out "to feed the bear in case it got hungry". Hmmm).

Bears aside, if anyone has some good hints to stop the raccoons from chewing off the stretch cord securing the lids on garbage cans, I'd love to hear them! :)

See this is why I would love to live somewhere like Canada, I love the cold and the wildlife, it has always been my dream to retire to a log cabin in Canada with the missus and a husky to keep me company.
I WILL DO IT ONE DAY
