I always have been using my HDD as the drive to run my windows. Recently I bought a SSD and decided to take my HDD out the system.

Since then I can't start up my PC. Everytime I power on I get system recovery and I can't get it to boot from my SSD. When I go into setup of BIOS it only has the option to boot up from HDD or USB but I won't to boot up from my SSD.

Hello and welcome. The SSD would not have come with an operating system such as Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or 8. Without an operating system, your computer won't run.

You need to start your computer from a Windows installation disk. That should see your SSD and install the operating system onto the drive.

What make and model computer are you working with?

I have windows on SSD and also on the HDD..

When I normally power up , I get option in bios to either start from one or the other.

Since I took out my HDD, I don't get that screen with start up options anymore. I get recovery screen.

To be clear.. I only have SSD in my system now, with windows on it.

Interesting. How did you get Windows onto the SSD?. Did you install Windows with the SSD installed in the computer?

Basically, did you boot from the install disk to install Windows onto the SSD? If not, how did you install Windows onto th SSD?

I installed windows on my SSD through cd disk. Then I booted my PC from the SSD. Second thing I did: I formatted my HDD and took it out of my system. Then I rebooted but I get system recovery screen everytime I reboot.

    New piece of information:

I had an USB stick on my computer with system recovery. (that is why I got system recovery :/) I took that USB out.. when I reboot now, I get:

"no boot device available - strike F1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility"

You need to format the drive and reinstall Windows.

You have booted into C: Drive and wiped your Operating System.

When you have a duel boot setup on a computer, whichever operating system you boot into will show as the C: Drive.

THE BOOT DRIVE IS ALWAYS C:!!

So how can I change my SSD to C:?

Is this possible without formating my SSD?

I already have windows on my SSD but it is called F: drive

You need to disconnect the old hard drive. Connect the SSD. Then use the Windows install disk to install Windows. It should only see the SSD because that is the only device connected. Once Windows is installed, the SSD will be given the drive letter C.

    Give it a shot.

A long shot as I haven't tried this, however it won't cause any greater problem than you have, turn it off and disconnect from all power. Then remove the CMOS battery, leave it out for at least five minutes, also once removed, push in the start button which should drain any small amount of power left in the system. That should reset the BIOS back to default settings.
Then replace the battery and power it up again, The BIOS just might then see the SSD as a boot device and automatically label it as the "C" drive.
This does of course depend on the Windows OS still actually being on the SSD if it hasn't been reformatted by accident.

Your Boot Drive SSD should be plugged into SATA Port 1 (First) on your Motherboard.

Is it still saying the SSD is not "C" but some other letter?
If so, I am afraid it is back to the start and first format it, then re-install the Windows from the CD or DVD.
If as you say you haven't a disk drive at the moment, can you borrow a working one? Otherwise you will need to get one.
