Ok thank you. I will try this and get back. I just reseated the cpu and although it seems to be sitting tightly I did have trouble with a couple of the 4 feet on the cooler so I will definitely check those. Thanks again.

Also the psu had a cable with an 8 pin connector split in 2 and my board takes a 4 pin so that was different to my last psu. So I did use one of those for the 12v socket.

Thats fine use one of the two 4 pins connectors. You also cannot tell if the heatsink is properly installed without removing the board.

Ok I just tried the motherboard totally outside the case and it did the same thing. I shorted the 2 pins and it go's to power up for a split second then nothing. The feet for the cooler are definitely through and I just did them again to make sure.

What would be the next step now?

    Thanks

Since it does the same thing outside the case then we are left with replacing the components outside the case as the only solution. Different ram, different video card cpu and finally the motherboard. Now the odds are on the video card. The Asus board has onboard video have you tried using that and removing the video card?

Yeah I tested it outside the case without the video card and then I tested it with it installed but the same thing happened.

Is it possible that my previous psu could have damaged both my motherboards in a similar way? Feels possible after a lot of testing things.

I might ask if amazon will exchange the bosrd because they are normally pretty fair or if not then I could at least send it to asus to get checked as it's only 8 months old.

Yes more than possible in fact it is likely the psu damaged components. But you did try it using the onboard video with the video card out?
Take the ram sticks out and tell me if you here 3 beeps or any beeps trying to start it up please. The board has to have a motherboard speaker in use but you do I believe.
I doubt Amazon will do that for you but you can create the rma and return it as those boards usually carry a 3 year warranty so go here:

I did try with the video card out. I thought it was just my cpu that had intergrated graphics and not the board. I didnt test without ram so I will try that next.

Then I'll sort out about getting a new board.

The cpu does have integrated graphics so then that isn't onboard video I guess.

Ok I just tried something interesting....

I took everything out of the case apart from the psu and the ssd & hdd.

I then installed parts from my old system which were the motherboard. Cpu and ram and strangely it still did the same thing.

Surely this might mean the seasonic psu could be faulty?

I'm going to try the psu from my old system and see what happens.

Lol yeah it's pretty bad luck. I just spent ten minutes in my head going over all what I've done and it has to be psu related.

The seasonic failed to boot 2 mostly different systems so surely it's gotta be bad.

The ocz booted the old system but struggled with the new system. I really hope if I replace this psu then the new one works otherwise I'm giving up.

Ok I'm getting a XFX pro 650w today so hopefully this will work for me.

After doing some more interesting reading I realised that the model's of ocz & seasonic psu's that I bought we're not in the "Haswell compatible" list. So that could have caused issues for sure. But we will see.

Most of what you are calling compatible are really more lists of what was tested with the hardware item and works and they cannot test everything.

Oh well for whatever reason everything now works! Which is a huge relief. It was a stressful journey getting to the bottom of it but I learnt a few good lessons from it.

Thanks a lot for all the help along the way.
