If you send or receive packages (and that time of year is coming up fast) you might want to track them online. You can do this by visiting the website of each carrier, but that will start to look like a lot of work if you use more than one carrier or track more than one package.

Try Packagemapping http://www.packagemapping.com/. When you enter tracking number, it will auto detect the carrier, give you the status of the package, and show you a map of its progress. Currently supported are UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, and Canada Post.

If you want to keep track of several packages, create a free account and add up to six packages to your list. You won’t have to enter the numbers each time. You can create an RSS feed for your packages, or have the details and delivery notifications e-mailed to you.

Packagemapping can be installed as add-ons in Firefox and Thunderbird. When you receive an e-mail confirming that something has shipped, you can simply highlight the tracking number and PackageMapping.com takes over. You can also use the Vista Sidebar Gadget or an iGoogle Gadget. It is all available here: http://extensions.packagemapping.com/.
