openoffice.org calc

    I cannot create a macro for spreadsheet in openoffice calc. I follow the steps to create and when I get to a certain stage, it say that I need Java runtime environment installed on my computer. my computer shows I have the latest update to java. I click OK to exit the program and the computer freezes up and will not close. I then have to reboot my computer and restore the file.
    any help? Of course I am running windows 8

    What is the security setting ?
    Tools > Options > Security > Macro Security
    Try the Medium setting if it is set to High.
