Open File - Security Warning

Discussion in 'Windows Security' started by Vilius Mockûnas, Aug 27, 2009.

  1. Hello,

If I try to execute file from remote location I get "Open File - Security
Warning" dialog. By pressing run button I can execute.
I can control this dialog by adding network location to local intranet
zone - if my network location is present at this zone - no more dialogs are
    displayed.
But one program installer(exe file) now always launches from same remote
location without Security Warning dialog - doesn't matter if remote location
is present in local intranet zone or not. (I mean 'now' because it displayed
dialog when I launched it for firs time - but not now after couple of
installations). So somehow windows considers this installer is secure but
not by using local intranet zone.

What other settings/rules could make this happen ?

remote location - Windows Server 2003 SP2 share
    client - Windows XP SP3

    thanks
    Vilius

This happens because Windows LABELS the file. It is the same when you
download a file from the Internet it is labeled "low trust" and you get a
promt when you want to execute it. Once you allowed it to run Windows changes
the label (or removes it?) so next time you don't get the warning prompt for
    the same file.

Note that labeling uses file stream so it works only if the file system is
NTFS. (ie. if you download a file from the Internet onto a FAT32 disk or USB
stick you will not get the warning prompt)

  3. But I never download that file I only execute it from remote location. I
cheked the file - it has no streams asociated with it.
