I have a client that wants to upgrade an XP system to Win 7. This is a Dell Dimension system around the 4500 series. I know a RAM upgrade would be needed but other than that I'm wondering or asking for opinions as to if this series of system would be able to effectively run Win 7. I already figure that Aero would need to be disabled.

Any thoughts? I imagine the system probably has a P4 @ 1.8-2.2Ghz.. Probably 512meg-1gig RAM.

Thanks, DSTM, I would not even consider this if the considered upgrade were to Vista but Win 7 is a bit more forgiving as to old hardware.

I would LOVE to run the update advisor and, if I could this thread probably would not be here... The issue is that due to a corrupted XP install the system is not currently able to boot. I could fix the XP install and run the advisor but that would cost the client more money verses being able to determine if the machine could run 7 without having to charge time costs for doing XP first.

Make an image of the current machine then give the W7 install a try. Or, if you have a spare hard drive, install W7 using that drive.
