NTLM in browser sending wrong user name

I am trying to connect to a aspx page which is configured with NTLM
authentication using the user name/domain I am logged into in my workstation.

I can log in automatically (not prompting me for credentials since it gets
my login credentials) but the credentials are wrong. During the NTLM
challenge/response IE is telling the server i am user "X" when in fact I am
    logged in as user "A".

The only relevance user "X" has is that I logged into a network drive as
    user "X".

But I log into my own machine which this is running off of as user"A".

Why does it do this? How do I fix it?

  2. Without knowing your full Windows version, IE version, and the machine's
patch status, we can't even begin to assist you here.

    Sorry forgot those details!

Windows XP Pro 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
    Internet Explorer Version 6.0.2900.2180

I am pretty sure the browser is not to blame, because I enabled NTLM on
Firefox and tried using that and it too is sending the NTLM user as the wrong
user. So it seems both browsers is using the same module to handle the NTLM
    negotiation.

    thanks!
