Hi---Looking at NoteBooks. Want one--But don't know much ahout them. It will not be used all that much, just for surfin in other rooms & in case my desktop crashes.

Any recomeneded Brands?? Any thing special to look for? Think I will use a Router to run it.

I like something like this ↓
    My link

Don't want to spend much more than $300. Also a tad larger in size would be OK

What Ya Think Out There ? :)

Your post says Notebook but the link is for a "netbook." If you are sure that you will only be using it for surfing etc. a netbook will be fine as a secondary device. Don't expect it to perform in the place of your desktop except as a short term fix so you can get help.

Most netbooks are smaller and once you get into size you will be moving more toward a genuine notebook or laptop. I notice that the one you selected comes with XP while there are others that are Windows 7. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to learn the new OS. Your ability to surf will not be effected since the browsers work the same regardless of the OS. If you do select Windows 7, make sure it is "Home Premium." I noticed that one of newegg's offering has 7 basic. Avoid that one.

I am not a big fan of Acer myself but I am not good enough at evaluating hardware to make a specific recommendation. I have done extremely well with Toshiba products and have a bit of brand loyalty. Even so there are vast differences within a specific brand.

Might be worth noting that this was priced at $299.99 until Oct 3 of last year, when it dropped to $289.99. It has stayed there since.

Netbooks are Very Very limited and most tend to run Linux based OS' to keep the HDD space down.
If you are literally just planning on using it for the web and maybe a few word/excel docs then yes they are fine for that, anything else and you run into issues.

HI----Here is what I have kinda selected.
This netbook----cause of high customer reviews & price. ( I won't be doing much with it---surfing OR a call for HELP )
    My link

This brand of Router---Cause of DSTM recommendation.

    My link

NOT sure of the operating range of this router--I don't know how to find that info---anyone know how---wonder if I could get the answer on google?

About ready to place the order---But still open to opinions or advise ;)

I would not get to concerned about range. Unless you live in a very large house most any router particularly an N will do fine. Range is dependent upon many things such as the number and makeup of walls, etc. Since your router will have to be located very near your modem you shuld just evaluate where it is located against where you feel you would most often use the wireless netbook.

As I think I indicated before, the netbook that you selected is XP Home. You may want to take advantage of others that offer windows 7. Just be careful not to select one with 7 basic. Home Premium is what you would want. On the other hand if you are happy with XP and you really are intending this for limited use then the choice is yours.

I am still of the opinion that if you want a larger sized screen you should look into a regular notebook. They are available at the lower end based on your stated intentions and have much larger screens. (Of course that means that they are also heavier. In my opinion netbooks are best for people who are always away from home and don't want to be burdened with a bigger laptop. They tend to use them at the local Starbucks more so than at home.

Here is one that is just slightly more than the one you have selected but has a 15+ inch screen. It is not a top end laptop but has more functionality than a netbook. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834114805 Saying that, it does not have a webcam if that is important to you.

Just adding,I did have a wireless Router, and I was told to centrally locate it, in the Home.
Off the Floor, and not near any walls, or metal objects.
I was also told, that if I had a cell phone,it could interfere,as they run the same frequency.

I also agree with Barry,a notebook for a little extra cost, would be my choice also. :)

    OK BARRY-----Checked > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114805
Looks pretty good---Back to THINK mode :snckr:
I do like the larger screen & don't need a web cam.

    THANKS for the Recommendation ;)

    & DSTM----thanks for your input too ;)

I was pointing out what you can get for similar money. For example I am not all that sure what the AMD Sempron processor really is but I think it is a single core CPU. Still it is faster than the Intel Atom on the netbook. You can keep going up in price and improve the performance.

I personally like Toshiba products but merely searched newegg for price comparison since you are quoting from there. The bottom line is there are full laptops available at that price range.

When considering a laptop/desktop, one must be mindful that
software is being/will be tailored for multi-core systems.

Stay away from single core systems !

True. But I think it prudent to always have an eye toward the future.
