For months I have been connecting my laptop (Windows 7 HP Pavillion dv6) to my TV (not sure what kind... says DGIM on the front) and it has been working perfectly but for some reason the sound is now only coming out of my laptop not my TV like before. I have tried restarting my laptop, turning my TV off and on, taking out the HDMI cable and plugging it back in and installing updates on my computer but it still isn't working.

On other forums people have suggested going to audio settings and choosing HDMI as the audio output but isn't even an option. They also suggested buying a cable (can't remember what kind) for the sound but I don't think that is it because it has been working perfectly with just the HDMI for months.

    Any other suggestions??

    Thanks :D

    Hi Lucyp543. Welcome to CHF.

Why isn't setting your TV as default audio an option?

Can you right-click on the sound icon on the taskbar (near the time), click on the PlayBack tab, then Right-click on either HDMI or Speakers and select "Set as default" to switch between TV and PC speakers?

I would think it has to be either your Laptop or the TV.

Just to add a bit. I assume you have made no changes as you haven't mentioned any. If it worked before and just stopped now it may be a simple hardware issue. The problem is trying to find out what that might be. (Cable, laptop or TV?)

    1. Have you tried a different HDMI cable?
    2. Assuming that doesn't work the problem may be with the HDMI port either on the laptop or the TV.
    3. As a workaround you could use a simple cable from the audio output on the laptop to the input (if it has one and they usually do) on the TV. That will get you an analogue sound.
