No automatic updates since installed Firefox

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Christopher Glenn, Oct 14, 2009.

  1. I have used IE for years and know about the systray icon that says
there are updates (I have it set to alert me, so I can do it
    manually).

Having given up on IE (still installed, IE6 on this computer, IE7 on
my other - this happens on both computers), I installed Firefox
    (V3.5.3) over a month ago.

Since then, no auto update icon at all. I manually went to WU to find
about 7 security updates, plus others, totalling 12 critical updates.

Why won't Windows alert me now?

The installation of Firefox has no correlation to automatic updating.
Guessing that this is Windows XP ... suggest you check out the
    WindowsUpdate.log:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log for the most recent entries.
What you're looking for is FATAL or WARNING error entries.
Also, check to see if updates are being regulated. Such an entry will
    look similar to this:

    2009-08-17 07:36:45:739 980 370 DnldMgr Regulation:
    {9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77} - Update
DAA5C9BF-D188-40FE-AF01-DFC72D5D422A is "Priority" regulated and can NOT
download. Sequence 5472 vs AcceptRate 0.

If/when you locate the most recent entries with FATAL or WARNING errors,
please post back with the section of the log that contains them.

In the meantime, you can try running the Fixit here:

How do I reset Windows Update components?

Suggest you download and *save* MicrosoftFixit50202.msi
Once the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Also, if a 'destructive' antivirus is installed, such as McAfee or
Norton, strongly suggest that you *temporarily* and *completely* disable
it to prevent it from interfering with the Fixit's operation.
If temp disabling the 'destructive' AV is too difficult, then either
consult their User Guide/Help files or visit their sites.
Or, you can just clean boot XP -

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state

Once XP is in the clean boot state, with the system connected to the
net, run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi. Choose it's Default mode first.
Reboot after it's finished it's operation. If the system still cannot
detect needed updates, run it again and choose the Aggressive mode.
Reboot afterwards and see if the system detects updates.

Did you set Firefox as your default browser? That could be why.

  4. Yes. Does IE have to be the default browser to allow auto update to
    work?

  5. I will do this hopefully tomorrow. Unless IE has to be the default
browser for auto update to work (as in the next post's suggestion).

No. Which operating system are you using? How is the Automatic Updates (or
    Windows Update) control panel configured?

    Harry.

Windows Automatic Update is a separate service from web browsers.

You might check Control Panel to see what Windows Update settings.

I have Firefox 3.5.3 and have no problems with Window Automatic Update on
Windows VIsta and VII, 32-bit or 64-bit.

  8. Sorry for the delay...out of town until this AM.

I use Win XP Pro. I have WU set to automatically download but "let me
    choose when to install them."

  9. Below is where the WARNING and FATAL messages started. But I think I
installed Firefox before that, but I'm not sure. This is one set of
very similar sets on days when WU failed. This happened on Oct 5, 6,
10, and 11. It did not happen on Oct 7 and 8 where the log said "no
    updates detected."

  10. Christopher,

If the error messages don't continue to appear, I'd guess that MowGreen's
suggestions have fixed the problem. You'll have to wait and see whether next
month's updates are offered to you automatically or not. :)

    Harry.
