Yes your right Bob, that is where it should say Service Pack 1 if it is installed. At least we know now it isn't as yet.

So this is the link to the right update here Bob, try this and let's see if you get the same message or if it installs correctly.

    Edited=
Ignore that link, I just found it is for Windows Media player and not for service pack 1
Hang on while we find the right one.

Here is the right address for service pack 1 stand alone installer,

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842

Go down the list to the bottom one as in this screen shot Bob. The one ringed in red, click on the red download button, do not install it straight away, save the file first to a folder and install it from there.

    Quoted from Microsoft=

Note: Do not select 'Run' after clicking the Download button.
You should save this file to a unique folder in the Windows 7 drive/partition.

    Hair tearing out time gents
I DO NOT THATS DO NOTunderstand SAVE FILE TO A UNIQUE FOLDER
i DO understand not to run it from the download
I have the red ringed file downloaded
    again thanks all you friends

    think I might try this
    Service Pack 1 Installation files:
Even though I had a choice of using a SP1 DVD created from the downloadable SP1 .iso file to install SP1, I choose to simply create the DVD from the .iso file and then copy the appropriate SP1 .exe (32 or 64-Bit) from the DVD to a folder on the Windows partition.

if you like, since the DVD setup can automatically choose the correct (32 or 64-Bit) version to be installed, you can use a DVD drive to install SP1.

Hi Bob, sorry if the UNIQUE FOLDER business confused you, it just meant to save it somewhere where you know where it is, to save you searching all over your computer looking for it.

However first things first, please go back up the thread and download and run that system update readiness tool that Allheart posted a link to, that should correct any faults that could prevent service pack 1 from installing.

    Hi Bob,

I believe Dougie gave you similar instructions to this in Post #6. These instructions will require you to have a Windows 7 DVD
at your disposal. Insert your Windows 7 DVD and follow the prompts below....

(NOTE: This method does not require you to be in Safe Mode.)

In Accessories go to Command Prompt, right click, click run as Administrator.
    type in: net stop cryptsvc
Press Enter & wait for service to stop.
    type in: CD\
    press Enter.
    type in: CD Windows\system32
    press Enter
    type in: ren catroot2 catroot3
    press Enter
    Reboot

Try and run windows update again. Hopefully SP1 should complete successfully.

Hi Bob. Allheart55's method is quite simple. Try Again.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right Click > Run as Administrator.

Another method to bring up Command prompt is to Click Start, then in the search box write "Command Prompt".
From the box that appears Left Click on Command Prompt.
