Sorry, I lost the original post...
I've built a brand new system and just turned it on
    Asus K8N-E board
    1 GB Ram
    ATI video card (AGP)
Seagate 40Gb EIDE drive ( previously used)
    Sony DVD/CD
    WinXP pro in DVD drive
pre-booted and changed setup to 'boot from DVD'
    boots from DVD - ok
Problem - loads drivers up to point where it says loading NTFS file system, then black screen, system restarts...
On first pass, I found the HDD cable wasn't seated ok, but even after this was corrected, it does it consistantly...

I changed the OS disk to Win2K and now it proceeds to the point where it asks of you want to install the OS. Pressing ENTER, returns a Please Wait" prompt and that's where it stops... 'Please Wait' stays onscreen and nothing happens.

    any suggestions?

    thx

You could possibly have a dirty lens on the DVD player, it might not be able to read some files.

Do you have another image of XP you can use... possibly an original copy ??
